Yes the advert overlays over images appeared weekend before last, and I agree annoying, intrusive and quite shite to be honest. Takes away from the end user experience.
A couple of us raised this in the "Suggestion Box" thread (in the premium member's forum). The advert overlays were removed from most of the site, but it seems there are some sub-forums where it still exists.
I'll raise it again but in the admin forums to sort this out once and for all.

I sent Matt a PM on this.. it gets removed when you become a premium member.

I think its a stupid idea to have it all over the images, it would be better placed between posts, banner, footer.. << THe Older Gamers forum does that... That way you still get you adds in, without blocking images.

Its not so bad on the huge images, its on the medium to small images they become a problem!.

EDIT: VRX_Petes Sig is 50% banner atm! :P
