Ok. I intend to defer university this year, (6/12 months, perhaps indefinitely) and take a full time job. I'm prepared to relocate to make this happen tbh, I've even been considering moving back to England for a bit.

Just wondering, anyone seen anything that might suit in their area? I'm looking espec at Brisbane/Gold Coast or Melbourne, if not Cairns.

Its either that, or I'm also considering backpacking for the period. Anyone done this before? Tips, advice? Espec on getting brief work in each area.

I'm not dropping it per se, I'm just taking some time off. I didnt do very well in the first year (failed 80%) and I'm looking for some direction in life; I have no idea what I want to do. I was/am doing a Bachelor of Law.

Re: Job that I'm after. Full time would be good. I've been looking at jobs within the casino industry, because that happens to be one of my loves, but I'm also looking at retail/admin etc. I've started to dislike sales - I did a door-to-door sales role for a few weeks in the holidays and though I was good at it, I hated it. I'd also look at 'exciting' roles lol - ie with sweet companies like...idk, white water rafting, skydiving, those one-day 'drive a rally car' things. even as reservation guys, just to be there would be sweet.

I'm getting my RSA/RSG by the end of this week, so I'll be looking at a second job in a pub/club as well.

Should see about doing the gaming license course. It comes up usually twice a year in T'ville and its a 14 day course. Then, some of the people (if good enough) get a few months on some cruise ships doing the casino games or just stick to the casinos in the NQ area for jobs. They turn over quite a few jobs in T'ville. You will be black listed against betting in the casinos when you start working there.

Also : Backpacking - You need some serious money depending on where you are going. Since you come from the UK, you can go back easy enough, and we all know that England is the main gate-way to all of Europe, so you would be in a better position then other Aussies who have never been there. As for going around the Eastern coast of Australia, all the main cities are so far away from each other. Its not like you can hitch a ride from Brisbane to Sydney in 30mins. If you drive (when you get your license back) you will need plenty of fuel money, and will need to either pitch a tent for cheap accomodation or fork out the dosh for back packers lodges. (would think twice before going in a few of them places in small towns)

Best to have a plan of when to go, and where to stay. I'm sure there would be some nice Club CJ people, who wouldn't mind taking in a pom for the night!!

I had a mate who needed time out from uni, went to work as a lollipop turner, on a road crew.

He made a staggering $60 an hour, out in the boonies.... free accommodation and meal allowance. Outrageous!

Would kill me.. but money for barely moving!!

Azza - if I packpacked in Europe, I'd sell my car. Its that simple. If Aus, then I'd work in each town/city. Prob at hotels so I could work for a room. I plan to have my RSA by the end of this week.

But, I'd definately prefer to get a fulltime steady stable job either here or in a capital.

Capital cities for rent are really expensive Josh. The price of 'nothing flash' units in Cairns around $220-250. The price in Brisbane = $350-400. You need a decent paying job to move and work in the city or know some people you can stay/live with......and to get a good job, you need to stay in Uni. Working in a bar in Brisbane pays the same as working in a bar in Cairns - especially when you first start out.

Absolutely. It is very difficult to get back into the swing of full time study once you park the brain up for too long. As we get older it is more difficult.

You don't seem to have a plan.....bailing out of uni you man never go back. Very popular for Brits to have a gap year... but that is a defined year and normally you can only delay 12 months otherwise the college will not hold your place.

My advice. Work out if it is 6 or 12 months and stick to it. Have a plan. Are you doing it to save up some cash? If so, get a job in WA or Qld mines as a labourer. If you are travelling/backpacking, then get the appropriate visas (if required) and go. Working a bar in a capital city for up to 6 months is hardly backpacking...you need to move around and far, otherwise it is just working and you can do that in your home town!

Dont know if you've ever seen me properly, therse a pic of me in the mugshots thread, but I'm not cut out to be a labourer. I'm basically ur not-so-typical computer guy.

Plans... Everyone keeps saying I need a plan. I hate that idea. I really do. I have no idea what i want to do in life. Not a clue. I just want to have fun. lol. And make money while I'm at it. I'll probably end up running a waterskiing school or a nightclub or snowski intructing or something.

What????? We have snow skiing up here in the north.......Hook a brother up yo!!

You seem as if you are a more laid back, friendly, easy going guy Josh, who loves communicating with people, and having fun as well (too much at times maybe), so maybe you need to chill out and mature up a bit and then decide whether to return to Uni.

If you failed most of your first year, then you have to remember, you obviously already had one year off from studying!!!! You're young, so that is in your favour for jobs available. Good luck, and when you get your license back, and wanna cruise down to Brissy, PM me and Chris B, and we'll cannonball run down the coast.
