30,000km service: what to expect

Hi dudes,

I've got about 4000km's to my next service at 30,000km's. I've had my CJ for 10 months now, mainly country driving, with city driving during the weekends. Overall no problems with the car, but I just want to touch base with those who has exceeded the 30,000km's and done their service. What kind of issues did you have with the car at 30,000km's, did you take the car back to a Mitsu dealer for servicing, and how much did it cost?
If you see a blue lancer in Melbourne and it looks like a VRX, that'll be me!

Not sure as I've only done 10,000km.

But a few tips for saving $$ - provide your own oil, oil filter and air filter to save a bit of cash.

With the oil and oil filter if you get decent (read: nulon or equiv, k&n for the filter) you'll get a better product at a similar cost to what the dealer charges.

At 30000 you'll have to start looking at tyres but when I had my 30000 done by a dealer it wasn't any dearer than your 15000.

Can you do that with mitsu? will most dealers allow you to provide your own oils/filters etc?

I thought that was part of the 'mitsu diamond advantage' or whatever - the catch is, u gotta pay for everything and GET everything from mitsubishi?

Might be wrong - have you tried this? (taking in your own service parts for a service) ?

Did it with my old car. Don't see why it would be an issue with my new one.

If the oil meets the requirements (viscosity etc) as the user guide states then I can't see why they'd force you to use their below standard products and crappy ryco filters apart from them losing out on profiting from the margin they put on them.

If what you are saying is the case I'll just get my car serviced somewhere they do allow you to provide your own gear, over the course of the year I'm sure the savings will outweigh the cost of the free roadside assist.

The issue I'm thinking of isn't with the mitsubishi warranty sorry...

PM (Preston motors in Vic) Give an extra 3 years warranty (or something like that) for cars that are serviced AT PRESTON MOTORS...

It's not a mitsubishi thing - it's a preston motors thing....

And I am under the impression from skimming through the fine print on that warranty, that the car HAS to be serviced as-per-book, at preston motors. Otherwise the warranty is void.

I think it's just like a "u help us we'll help you" from PM... but I was under the impression I'd HAVE to be paying for products from them, as this is probably how they make enough money to offer 3 years extension...

I am around 50% sure tho - don't take my word on it...
Did you get a dealer-specific warranty option at all?

Most places will need to order them in for our cars. Should cost you $20, if they try and charge you more ask if they are tacking delivery onto it - if so ask them to send it with their next order and to charge you the correct price minus delivery. Part numbers can be found on the K&N website, along with places that sell them. I know Repco do, but don't keep stock of them.


Jazzy that 3 year extra warranty I have no idea about. Best to speak to the dealership in question and clear it with them. I would think they wouldn't have an issue with a premium product being used as opposed to something like Ryco/OEM and whatever oil they use.

Just had my 30k service. No idea of cost though as a novated lease car.

The only thing I would ask them to do is rotate your wheels (swap front for backs) and get them ballanced.

You can can get a K & N panel filter from RPW here in Perth for a very Good price. They are a site sponsor.

Their price beats Rocket Industries who are the Aust distributor.

I'm nearly at 38,000 :O

And I do my own services. Always have, always will.

And for those that are worried about the warranty issues... Factory warranty is NOT affected at all whatsoever.

Just read the fineprint on my dealership "vehicle protection plan"

Basically comes into effect after the mitsubishi warranty is up and will last me an extra 36 months or until 175,000k's...

Says in bold print:

AN IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT IS THAT YOU HAVE ALL YOUR SERVICES PERFORMED AT OUR DEALERSHIP IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTY WHILE IN FORCE AND AT 6 MONTH/10,000 KILOMETRE INTERVALS THEREAFTER. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE SERVICING REQUIREMENTS WILL IMMEDIATELY VOID THIS WARRANTY AND SERVICE CONTRACT.

So if I want 13 years warranty, gotta keep getting it serviced at PM I guess...
Hmmm.... if only I was more of a mechanic... it'd be worth tossing the last 3 years to save the money on services I'd reckon...
