An Oily Experience

Postby AdamD » Fri Dec 23, 2011 10:23 am

Before anyone says anything, yes, I know! The service intervals are 15K.

Anyways, I don't personally trust this and think that the maximum should be 10K.

The reason being is that my missus had a Viva with a 15K interval, and only after 20K on the odo, things started going bad.

So, after only 7K in the new lancer I decide to drop the oil and change the filter (I would've done this at 7.5K but I can't service the car myself halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, yeap, ROAD TRIP :D

So yesterday I changed the oil and put in regular Magnatec. I have used this oil before in cars and found it rather good. But the change it made to the Lancer was mind blowing. The car IS faster. The car DOES idle better. It's like a bloody miracle, and I'd highly recommend it.

As you may or may not be aware, different Mitsu dealerships will use different oil, with no constant variable between them. So when I was at the stealership on Wed getting the filter I asked the service tech there some questions that you may be interested in:

1. If I change the oil and filter at 7.5K between services will this afftect my warranty?

Answer. No, but it is recommend that you fill out your service manual showing its been done in the additional service section.

2. Can I bring in my own oil for you to use when you service my car?

Answer. Yes, you can. However, with priced capped servicing, the price won't change (this is to do with rebates between the dealership and mitsubishi).

I think this is great. This means that you can have the one type of oil for the life of the car. And this is a good thing, and changing between oils a lot is not good for seals and rubber parts. Especially continual change, and mixing of, mineral and synthetic oils.

Now, I'm not advertising Magnatec. That's just the one that I chose. But if you do have a particular oil that you are fond of, this may be the way to go.

Love you all and have a wicked xmas!

Adam

If you bring your own oil and filter you can get them to refund you the costs. I did and I'm under capped price servicing. It may differ with different dealerships though.

Merry Christmas Adam and thanks for sharing your experiences
I use Magnatec in my CJ and I am more than happy with it, but it is a personal thing with oil and filter choices I have found
All the very best to you and your family

Hmm thats very surprising! Obviously you could do it normally but I would have thought with CPS they wouldnt change the price.

What weight magnatec did you get Adam?

Capped price means that they can't go over the limit.

They charge you for the oil, and should take some $$ off the price for not having to supply.

Personally, I used to run Castrol Edge and change every 15,000. Oil was always still fine after that interval.

You can never over service a car though :)

The Magnatec was the usual 10W-40

Picked it up on sale for $25.00 from repco :D

The new stuff they got, the "fuel saver" is just a thinner version at 5W-30.
