MAF sensor dying
those of you who read the EvoM forums will know that there has been a number of cases of the MAF sensor dying and people alleging that various brands of filter are the reason for it.
i just finished talking with the boffins at mitsu and i've had my MAF sensor die on me. according to them its reasonable to expect that the sensor will die suddenly. thankfully its all getting replaced under warranty regardless of the fact that the car arrived with a full HKS intake system including filter on it.
so the morale of this story is not so much to say that one brand of filter is worse than another (because its not i love my HKS and wouldn't swap it for anything) its more to say that IF you're running an aftermarket filter and IF your MAF sensor dies, don't panic because mitsu are aware of the problem and it wont void your warranty.

that wasn't the case at all with mine. they simply informed me that my MAF sensor had died and that it was being replaced under warranty. i didn't have to stand my ground nor even suggest it in the first place.
exactely right Adrian. its not a matter of which filter is best its a case of it simply dies and theres nothing can be done about it.
the HKS filter is a dry foam type filter and it actually outperforms the standard paper filter on those charcoal element tests that you often see on the net. i'll see if i can find a link to one.
