0 - 100 times in this day and age

Postby Ellimist » Sun Jan 10, 2010 5:42 pm

guys just interested on your thoughts on 0 - 100 times these days. i notice in my volvo that 0 - 100 doesn't mean much as a car that can be faster than me to 100 can't keep pulling once it gets there and get away from me. I find it interesting these days that the car seems to pull from 100 - 200 just as hard.

anyone like to confirm debunk or comment on would like to hear your thoughts.

You'll find some magazines and performance car brochures quote 0-200 and 100-200 times for that very reason. It's true, my Evo for example can pull hard to 140-150, and maybe even upto 200, but any higher than that takes a LOT of road. On the other hand, a lot of German saloons which don't do 0-100 that fast can keep on pulling upto the limit (i.e. 250). This is particularly evident in the large and heavy uber luxury saloons (e.g. S500, 750i) which may be a bit lethargic getting to 100km/h, but really can keep on pulling.

no replacement for displacement is the case i think. also the energy required to accelerate hard above 200 is huge because of the extra air you have to move out of the way.

i guess gearing also plays a large part here.

Definitely- no replacement for displacement. Either way, 0-100 is merely an arbitrary and easily comparable quantitative measure of a car's performance.

but really who does 0-100, they should list 0-50, 50-80, 50-100 and 80-100. only because they are the real world scenarios

The best comparison I have is a mate and his brother in law took 2 cars to the drags...

A mazda familia 1.6 awd turbo, and a GTHO replica. The mazda initally had the GTHO, but once the mazda runs out of puff the GTHO owned it. I cant remember specifics, it was a long time ago....

0-100 times are something to boast about in a way, but different cars go differently past 100.

higher end cars I believe have the same amount of power as they would at 3,000rpm or at 7,000rpm so that could sacrifice for some lower end accel times (this is just going by what I've read, I don't know how true it is!)

A good example that I can use, I can beat my mates v6 commodore to 100 but after that he pulls ahead.
