spare key remote

Hi, i tried to use my spare key the other day and found that the remote doesnt work, the key still starts the car and everything but the remotes dead, has this happened to anyone else, i havent dropped the remote and havent used it since i got the car pretty much.

Sounds like the battery is flat.

i replaced the battery and checked the voltage of the one i replaced, i think it might have just lost programming, know how to reprogram it?

As I said in your PM sicsid, you have to see the dealer.

they need to program it with the MUT-III computer.

Adrian, are you sure? Because, if thats the cause, then it wouldnt start the car? Yet OP said it did start the car, so surely its already programmed?

yeah that is a strange one... Perhaps it is programmed but actually faulty.

In saying that, I just tried my spare key, and it didnt open. I forgot to try to start the car though >.<

Just to help out here, both to clarify what *should* be happening and also satisfy myself that in the event my main smartkey goes flat .......

Mine is a MY10 bought 2 months ago. I just took my spare smartkey to the vehicle, and it both opened OK and started - and no need to remove the key itself.

In short, it behaved exactly the same as the main smartkey.

nope its the normal key, mines only a vr, yeah i suspect its a faulty remote, ill get the dealer to fix it, yay for warranty

In most remote central locking cars with engine immobilizers, the remote central locking is programmed differently from the immobilizer. There is a chip in the key which activates when you stick it into the ignition to 'mobilize' the car. So the reason why you were able to start the car was because it is seperate from the remote central locking, so the issue lies in the remote either lost the programming or dead battery. Either way it should be fixed free under warranty new battery wont work :)

The 1 computer controls it all in the CJ

WCM (Wireless Control Module) for regular models
KOS (Keyless Operation System) for Smart Key Models

Once a signal is received to unlock/lock it sends the message to the ETACS ECU to perform that function.

And when the key/knob is turned to START it tells the Engine ECU if it allowed to start.

All via Encrypted messages over the CAN-BUS. So very hard to bypass. So if the car wanted to get stolen, they'd have to steal the key!
