This sounds like the end for mobile phones that have GPS apps.

I suppose this is fair enough. I made my own cradle for my phone that plugs into the cigarette lighter plug .

I interpreted that part as normal mobile use for phone calls. However, using the GPS on the phone for navigation is not allowed even in a cradle.

Yeh, that does sound much more possible. I don't have a GPS or a phone with GPS capabilities I'm waiting for the new Android phones to come out hehe

Mobile phones
Using a mobile phone to make or receive a phone call while driving is prohibited except if the phone:

* is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle,
or
* can be operated by the driver without touching any part of the phone.

All other functions (including video calls, texting and emailing) are prohibited.

Holding the phone (whether or not engaged in a phone call) is also prohibited. Holding includes resting the mobile on the driver’s lap.
Learner and P1 drivers, are not permitted to use a mobile phone at all while driving.

Visual display units
A driver must not drive a vehicle that has a television receiver or a visual display unit operating if any part of the screen is visible to the driver or is likely to distract another driver.

A driver can use a driver’s aid such as a navigation device but it must be an integrated part of the vehicle design, or secured in a commercially designed holder, which is fixed to the vehicle.

That might explain why Nokia has been bundling the holder when you buy a phone with GPS in it.

Better off throwing the phone in the boot and using the bluetooth handfree.(when it works)

This is nonsense given the fact that some drivers use a dedicated Sat Nav, and the GPS capable mobile phones do pretty much the same thing. The law should only be against holding the phone on your ear while driving.

For my twopennys worth - I consider it completely negligent of our legislative powers NOT to prohibit use of both phones AND satnav while the vehicle is not completely stationary, and to allow cradles to be attached in an area that partially obscures driver view. Even at the bottom of the windscreen they should be banned, especially at night.
By Satnav, I mean actual operation of; like changing destination.

It's great initiative to design the MMCS such that the satnav cannot be adjusted while the car is moving. The bluetooth phone also has limited functionality unless you stop. This is a sixth star for the already safe CJ.
