Convertible Lancer???

Postby Graham » Wed Aug 26, 2009 6:31 pm

Hey everyone

I was driving home today and noticed a convertible CJ lancer!
I had to look twice, and a few more times to double check but it was definately a CJ with no roof on it!
Didn't get a rego or picture or anything but I checked google and couldn't find much..

Anyone heard anything about this?
(If it was anyone from this forum it was on Bennett st at 3:12pm)

I know there used to be a company many years ago called Sunchaser which did convertibles.... My Uncle owned the very first 81 Celica they ever made into convertible.

We have it now but I don't have the money I would want to put into it to get it back on the road :(

Damn you Graham..... where are the pics :P

Pics or it never happened!

Nah, there are aftermarket convertible companies. But they end up looking crap and not original.

Mitsubishi got 300 CE coupes made into convertibles back in 2000 I think it was...

Was it still 4 door? Or did they redo the doors????

I rekon they would of had to redo the 4 doors and make it a coupe. Im not sure how well the doors would hang if it was still a 4 door without a roof...

Yeah, generally cars that are easier to turn into a convertible have pillarless doors.... It could be done as a 4 door.... but can't see it looking that great lol

Four door convertibles do look suspect!
Once the roof is chopped a hell of a lot of bracing is required to stop the body flexing too much, and to keep the doors swinging correctly
lzy_eye that conversion company used to be behind my mates garage at Marrackville from memory - The Celicas looked nice chopped.

Rag tops rock.... but makes me think more of a classic style car... to pull it off in a new car it needs to be a hardtop....

I would love to win lotto so I could restore our Celica :(
