Philips XTreme Power Headlights

Postby exaltd » Thu Aug 06, 2009 12:29 pm

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum, but i've been reading ur posts and it's been very helpful to me thus far on my new 09 CJ Lancer ES. :D

Just wanted to ask a question about the headlights I installed just a couple of days ago.

I bought some Philips Xtreme Power bulbs, replacing the crappy OEM ones...

HB3 12V 65W (high beam)
HB4 12V 55W (low beam)

It's working great and all, but it seems to be heating up the headlight plastic very quickly, i'm afraid it might discolour or even worse melt on a long journey.

Could anyone please tell me if this is normal? Or is it an aiming problem? Or perhaps a wattage-too-high problem?

Thanks heaps guys!

Welcome.

Please define hot, even with stock globes, the lens will be warm to the touch

I used to own a set of these and have had no problems with any overheating. If you've been driving quite fast i.e. > 80km/h in the winter, and the lamp housing is still unbearably hot, I think you may have other problems.

I currently use PIAA Super White & White in both low and high beams and don't have any heat problems. They are just warm to the touch. Nothing more.

Did you see how hot the standard headlights made the plastic to relate if there is a difference? If you're using the same wattage, I can't see there would be any increase in heat.

OEM low beam globes from memory are only 52W. I would suspect that the high beams are a similar wattage.

65W might be a bit too high.

Thanks for the advice. Firstly, no, i actually never saw how hot the lens got after using the OEM ones. And it's not unbearably hot, but i reckon it was a little hotter than the normal.

As for defining hot - i mean to say when touching the lens after a short journey i noticed it seemed to be of a high temperature... had only done low speed in suburban streets on high beam plus a bit of local driving on main roads on low beam.

Secondly, according to the other post on lighting, it would seem that the wattage is a little high.

OEM Low: 51W, Xtreme Power: 55W
OEM High: 60W, Xtreme Power: 65W

Does this help?

Thanks again!

You will be fine mate.

Headlights do get hot, and the minor temperature difference won't effect it.

My globes are 55W (low) and 65W (high) and I do not have a problem. Even ran the same globes in my previous car and had no problems.

Most headlights run 55/65 as stock anyway, strange our cars do not.

Good to hear Sir VRX.

I just don't wanna damage my headlights so i am very cautious... i don't have that much money to spare on mistakes made =(.

Oh yes, also, anyone else run these headlights? What are your experiences with them? :D

i know ofey used to run them, and now lzy_eye has them (I think?)

Ryan_C and myself run Narva Arctic Blues. Cheaper, and just as good.

I do indeed have them SIR-VRX.

I am yet to change my highs, but have no heat issues with the Philips globes in the low beam.

I will probably get a set of Narva Artic Blues for the high beam when I get around to it.

I've had phillips crystalvisions (i think they were 55W but cant rmember) in my low beams and they didn't even last a year. That's pretty poor for a $100+/set of lights....

Now I have the Arctic Blues Narvas but I thought when I put them in last night they were same wattage as OEM...

i buy my bulbs from powerbulbs.com

I use the Osram Night Breaker's, they are quite good but the Philips are a general better build quality though.

Yea, mine too say 55W and 65W on the packets for the XTreme Powers. However, i found the receipt differed and said 51W and 60W... weird, wonder which one it is... but i know the light is more intensive, so i guess it'll be 55/65.
