Car Camera Mounts

Postby tadz0rz » Thu Aug 06, 2009 6:10 pm

Hey guys

Ive been thinking since melbourne is going to be attending a fairly big meet (MCA) i might record some of the trip up there, and sine i got a wicked wizz bang camera it only adds to my idea of recording it.

I want an external mount, but not 100% if it would be worth it or not. It would be a cool thing to have but if its too expensive and too risky i dont want to..

I did try some...Home made mounts, although in concept was good, i was let down by poor manufacturing which wasnt my fault...

Ill post up pics of that later, but whats the best place, and best type of mount to go for in our cars?

I know there is a thread floating around that has a how to camera mount for EVO X's which is virtually exactly the same in the lancers because its just on the back pannel mounted into the child harness point things.

I got a suction mount from Ebay for about $20 havent tried it yet, but seems solid. If I can find the charger to my video camera (thats how much I use it) I am going to try using it at swansea.

I will probably mount mine on the inside of the windscreen though.

Half way down the page. Will hold on even around a race track.

Bought a Canon EOS500D now? or is a Fujifilm a "wizz bang" camera now?

Yeah, i made a makeshift one out of a mini tripod which i jammed inbetween the rear deck and the back seat. Held the camera okay, but since the camera i got is fairly meaty, the camera jiggles quite a bit.

My outside makeshift camera mount is so much better. Pics of it will be up later lol. You guys can have a good laugh :P

Those mounts are all very reasonably priced Ryan. I was expecting them to all be pricey!!!

We welded up a camera mount ages ago for my mates rally car. Used some hose clamps to attach to the roll cage and rubber under the camera mount. It worked surprisingly well but back then the auto focus wasn't too crash hot!!!

Bolted to the child restraint points so it wasn't going anywhere, and it didn't flex or move around under the loads.

Cost me a whole $12 to make.

You get what you pay for. Cheaper to buy a good one and know its not going to result in your camera falling or worse still going bye-byes out the window...

That is indeed CatP. And I took that photo so no permission issues!! :P

That type of mount is not for driving though. Only low speed "Rig Shots" like this:

yeah, i dont want to cheap out so bad that i destroy my camera. I do have my old camera that doesnt take sound. Which would probably be good since if i drove with it recording i would only get wind noise.

Not really worried if i lose the other camera to be quite honest, i bloody hate that camera, ruined so many good nights out. We shall have to see though.

Anyone else got any ideas on like in car mounts? btw, i could knock the one daveee posted for nothing since i do metal work at school and all that piece is is an offcut xD Only issue is, it aint adjustable, so if i mount it with the camera on it i might be recording the floor or the roof or something and not out the window

I tried a bracket attached to my seat, But it wasn't very sturdy.
A few pics HERE

I scraped that idea and I used 2 suction cups and a rubber band.
I placed the camera on my dash pressed up against the windscreen.
I placed a section cup on each side of the camera and the rubber band behind it. This worked really well.

I have some video clips posted somewhere on the web, I will see if I can find them.

HERE's a video using that bracket off the seat, see how it vibrates..

I had the camera on the dash with the 2 suction cups for THIS video
