SST clutch slipping or just needs new fluid

Postby JaymeF12 » Mon Mar 18, 2024 3:00 pm

I bought a 2nd hand RA recently and noticed from 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th the RPMs tend to stay when upshifting when in boost (~3k RPM) and the clutches were upgraded by the first owner ~80,000km ago so im just wondering if the clutches are slipping or if the old fluid is causing this (fluid was changed same time new SSP clutches were installed)
Trying to be optimistic about it as i was quoted 8k for new SSP clutches and not sure if its worth the 8k to get the new clutches (previous owner did get the SSP clutches installed 80,000km ago but also only changed the fluid then)

So really, just wondering if changing the fluid would fix the issue or just reduce the slipping
and when I do the SST flush, do i also replace the transfer and rear diff fluid?

Has it had the sst mod done? Highly recommend it. Mine is running a firmware from RP motorsport. Ak racing do a remote install service. Also it can be purchased from Evoscan. I have a built SST too.

Secondly if you have Evoscan and a Tactrix you can log clutch slip within the software. Maybe you could do a fluid change and clutch teach in. It would help if its a bit out of whack.

Clutch slip tend to cause shudder on take off.

Should change the SST fluid and filter every 60k if u drive it like a family car and more often since yours is modded. Get fluid from ford or transmax dual from sparesbox. Get external filter from ford.

xfer oil get burnt quicker since it is hot. Probably every 35k instead of 45k for rear diff. Castrol limited 90 is not expensive so why not.

8k for clutches these days? *facepalm*

Yeah, it had the SST mod done and rebuild by prev owner at tokyo motorsports.
I've done the fluid change and no change whats so ever haha, didn't think a teach-in was necessary as it isnt stated in the service manual. Should i still do it? or is it not worth the effort to set up the PassThruCan

The fluid was pretty dark and there was some speckles of clutch material in there (I think its normal) and pretty runny compared to the new fluid

yeah i got the castrol fluid and the filter and done it already, hoping it fixed it but it didnt ;(
Mine wasn't shifting up harsh from 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th, kinds sounded like a CVT where the revs stay the same going up in boost
yeah thats where two places i called quoted, i was too stunned by the price haha
so its between selling the car and saving for a manual X or just fixing this and keeping the car for however long

I always thought a teach in was meant to be done after a fluid change. I was having issues after my rebuild of sst, it was coming up service sst. I done a teach in and its been great for a year now

Would it be worth a shot to do the teach in and see if it fixes it? because it has SSP clutchpack installed so surely after 80,000km it wouldnt be slipping?

You can't break anything by doing a teach in. If it errors on anything you know there could be something going on with it. If they have a custom sst firmware on it maybe thats the culprit. Lots of guys are upping the pressures to much and causing issues. I have a build sst and mines running approx 5% I think

You dont need pass through can. I use EvoScan 3.1 it has everything built in to do the teach in now

Do you set it up the same as CANPassthru? or is it easier?
and what is the order you do the teach-in process

No you dont set up like pass thru. Just install the app and off you go. The teach in is from top to bottom on the list.
It has great diagnostics, logging and also can clear codes

I did the teach-in with evo scan, and with no avail. Did some logging and it seems like i barely hit 6psi and it just slips (only tested 2nd to 3rd) and light boost from 4th to 5th ands still slips. Not sure how only those gears are slipping and not the rest of them (every other gear shifts aggressively besides those two which feel like sport shifting no SS) SST temps hovers around like 85 to 87 when driving so that seems fine.

Could a bad tune cause the clutches to slip? because im not too sure about the mod history besides rebuild, 3 port, SSP 10p clutches and the first gen S-Sport flash (Done by tokyo motorsport by prev owner)

Great source of info. I haven't really felt my clutches slip, even before I rebuilt the sst, I was spending heaps rebuilding my broken motor so I did the sst at the same time.

I'm not sure if it was a bad tune or not, it was done by a reputable place here in WA
The rebuild was done about 80,000km ago or 4 years by the prev owner, they put the SSP EVO X clutch pack in (Thats what i was told)
It had the first variation (I think???) the of Super Sport Flash (Done same time rebuild and tune)
