Nice work, mines only done half the work, about 140k so I think the hand brake should be okay. Did someone recommend doing them at your kays?

No, I did them so I know they're done, I do need to adjust them up a bit more, and put in the new spark plugs. At that many kms yours should be okay, the old shoes had about 1.5mm of material left the new ones had about 3mm (I didn't measure :wink: ) just do an adjustment of a turn or so to bring it to spec of 3-5 clicks when you pull the handle up.

Yeah the handbrake doesn't wear like other brakes as you're normally stopped when they are applied, unless you do a lot of handbrake turns LOL.

The front brakes to the majority of the stopping work. Same as a motorcycle. However when the front and rear are used in combination the stopping power is dramatically improved

I know how brakes work,

I was just saying the hand brake if not used to slow the car therefor there is usually no friction that causes ware, its why they often last the life of the car.

What lasts the life of the car?
The rear brake pads or the handbrake , or the handbrake cable?

I have only changed about a dozen handbrake shoes(mainly commodore) they work fine right down to when you run out of adjustment. The majority of cars will never need them replacing. The biggest killer is over adjustment

Yes I was talking about the handbrake pads.

FYI asked the Repco service centre just down the street and they can do the work for $250, sounds like a good price.

On the lancer the rear brake is controlled by the handbrake.
The lancer rear brake pads will most definitely not last the life time of the car at all. You will be very hard pressed to find any vehicle where that is actually true.
I changed my rear pads on my lacer with 100,000 Kay's on the clock with about half of the pad gone.

$250 from Repco to do the work sounds good to me.

It will keep you and other road users safe and out of an already over worked hospital system and keep your car out of the panel beaters.

All I know is last service when they checked the brakes there was a note they were 2-3 mm left, didn't say if that was all round or just the fronts. Weird thing is they didn't even mention it when I picked up the car. I have no idea of the service history of my CJ and its done 140k now.

Now just waiting on a sale to get the parts needed.

How come you have zero clue about the service history of you car?
Where is the service log book that usually lives in the glove box?

Why are you not inspecting your own brake pads?

Brakes have to be the number one priority on any vehicle.
Tyres would have to be number two priority.
No brakes on your vehicle and your now piloting a death machine.

It says when services were done but there are no notes to indicate replacement brake parts, it only had 70k on it when I got it.

The brakes work, trust me I've had a few emergency stops and its pulled up quick and strait.

Okay how often do you replace the brake pads or machine the rotors?
