LED Light Bar

Postby Lancer1993 » Wed Dec 06, 2017 7:08 am

I'm exploring options to add lights to my CJ for a road trip. Not planning any night driving but I like to be prepared.

Is mounting one of these LED light bars on a roof bar legal for HWY use?

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/50inch-Curv ... Sw8axaA5nG

I have see other options with smaller ones mounted above the number plate.

Wouldnt it be similar to utes mounting spotties on the Roll bar?

They sit above the roof too. I suppose as long as you turn them off when you have on coming traffic or someone is in front of you.

Don’t know about the legality in QLD,but in NSW they are illegal. Also on the downside roof mounted lights flood the cabin with light so you can’t see very well. I’d just stick to a number plate mounting bracket and a small lightbar.

Yeah thought they might be. I was told even mounting a light bar on top of your bullbat is now illegal if the light is higher than the leading edge of the bonnet.

I'd prefer an install which is stealth, something which once removed you'd not see and holes or wires.

How strong is the top grill for mounting a light bar?
How heavy are they?

Front bumper isn’t really all that secure. You would have to try and brace the light from the steel part of the radiator support panel. I did one for my Evo and it was a very involved and complex job to do it. To do a similar thing to your car would involve cutting holes in the bumper..

Rather then go on hear say go and talk to your local transport department.
In qld there is no width limit other then light bar can not extend beyond width of vehicle
And a maximum of 4 additional driving lights
And lights mounted on roof sre perfectly legal

The elcheapo ebay ones are pure crapola in every way imaginable

If you want a decent led bar. Check out Stedi in melbourne
I can't wait to get one of theres around a 32 or 40 inch and mount it above the licence plate.
There is a licence plate mount that is airbah compatable. It think its made by "narva"
Do a search on the forum have posted all this info before

All good ideas,

Darryl - think I saw the end result of the spotties on your CJ.

Maybe a 50" with special mounts running the width of the bumper just under the head lights... overkill?

I do have some small but powerful spotties I used to have on the coupe. Yes the CCs bumper feels noticeably stiffer as are the number plate mounts but it's worth considering for a budget install as I'd just need the wiring, relay and switch.

One of these would be perfect

Comes with wiring. Relay. Freight to your door.and the led bar obviously
Awesome value for money and leaves the cheap and nasty ebay garbage for dead

If you tried, you could go up to a 32" curved (so then it will fit in the hole nicely) (the grille is slightly over 32" so should be a snug but good fit) stedi or other brand bar and mount it near the bottom lip of the bumper so it shines through the bottom grille.
I am looking at doing this to replace the 12" hard korr that i have installed on a number plate mount to get more throw distance, and because it wobbles a lot due to the plastic bumper, or i might have both installed for even more light

But if you do end up with a bar mounted like this, id love to hear how you did it, or if i get the time (and money  ) to buy the light bar and materials to do it, I'll show you :D

32 inch mounted above the licence plate will be fine. Currently have a 20inch mounted like that
Its not too bad. Just wish it was brighter. Should have bought a Stedi in the first place.
I wont shove the bar behind the grille. Way too much effort for minimum gains

How much do they weigh, I'd assume a 32" would be 33% heavier than a 20".

Saw a few people had them mounted behind the front grill for max stealth, thinking of doing that in the future

Yeah saw that too but only issue there is its lower down than is ideal and the grill will block some of the light, so might be a lot of work for no gain.

Yes checked the links and found the weights, I also picked one up in SCA once, they feel heavy.

Will see what I can do for mounting options now I have a shinny new welder I can play with to make something up :)
