Wheel Bearing replacement

Postby lachlan.davis » Fri Nov 03, 2017 6:45 pm

I've been noticing a bit of feedback under hard braking recently and now i've got underneath to check things out, my front wheel bearings are shot (probably back ones as well, and at least one front strut has blown but that's another matter...). I've got plenty of experience with trailer hubs but not car hubs, I've got a full workshop at work with press etc so it shouldn't be too difficult but just wanting to hear from people who have done it.

Whats the best (ie cheapest) source for the bearings? I'm assuming Mitsu will want an arm and a leg, if the quote for replacing the ABS pump is anything to go by!

On the plus side, the rotors all have only minor wear which was a very pleasant surprise.

Bearings are something you dont want to go "cheap" on.
Ever.
Inexpensive is far better.
I know a few people at a few bearing shops around the place.
Fireup google. See if you have someone close by from "allied bearings"
Failing that check out CBC bearings.

Out of curiosity, what is the mileage you have on the car?
I might add a pic of my car once I style the exterior a bit :).

SKF bearings, when you pull one of the shot bearings out, seperate it and turn a couple of mm off the outside of it in a lathe and use it to press the new bearings in, learned that one the hard way...

243,000  . I suspect the bigger issue would be the creek crossings washing out the grease.

Bumblebee and quismiff, I had assumed the bearings would be auto supplier specific, we buy a lot of small bearings for rebuilding electric motors at my work, I'll see what our bearing supplier can do.

A lot of OEM bearings are made by SKF FAG and other bearing manufacturers,
Then you get into the knock off ones like NKN. Timken, Nitto are other brands to consider.

I think with the lancer you buy the entire hub and replace that, need 4 new bolts to mount as they are a 1 time use only (Stretch when torqued down).

I was wrong, was thinking about rear wheel bearing. Front can be pressed out.

Thanks for that info mooman. A mate at a large dealer group got pricing for me, even at below trade price it will be about a grand to do all 4 corners, plus the front struts are blown, exhaust manifold or gasket is leaking, aircon needs regassing (or something more) so it looks like my 9 years of CJ ownership will be ending fairly soon :-(

Did you get the car servicing done regularly?

Until the start of 2016 I did, then I had a legal issue that didn't wrap up til Christmas time, by which point pretty much every other aspect of my life was a wreck from neglect. Definitely no fault of the car, besides the dreaded ABS pump issue she has been an incredible car. But basic transportation is what i need, and i can get a Hyundai Getz with half the kms and no issues for less than it would cost to fix the lancer.
