What is a GT?
The letters GT either with or without the stripes to most of us in Aus: is unfortunately taken to be a power machine a vroom vroom muscle car.
When in essence it really stands for Grand Tourer, or Grande Turismo, A car ideal for touring etc: with comfort, adequate power and a complaint well controlled ride.
In fact it would apply to just about any of today's new cars if available! many many rears ago. So if you feel your car with your mods rates GT badges go ahead and stick them on, or badges with the words for GT in full.

Re: What is a GT?
That's true. Calling those cars 'Grand Tourers' is a bit of an oxymoron. You have exhaust drone on the highway, poor handling, and stopping every 5 minutes to refuel.
I might add a pic of my car once I style the exterior a bit .
Re: What is a GT?
Crossing to the other side though! AAAAH, The Falcon GT HO III certainly was a Magic Machine! Now worth between a quarter of a million and
half a million dollars.
Many years ago, knew a couple of Dutch guys, bought a new Falcon GT and decided to drive it to Europe. Melbourne to Perth, ship to south India, then on through Afghanistan and on to Germany. They said wherever they stopped the car was surrounded, with all wanting to get a good look at this amazing, fire breathing monster! Also passed the comment that unmade roads as such didn't just have stones on them but more like rocks , so as they said, you could imagine, the car was a rattle trap when they got to Germany.
Traded it in. Direct swap, for 2 brand new BMW 2000s. Which they brought back to Aus: No they didn't drive back!

Other than model differentiation, haven't a clue!!!
HO in the case of Falcon. As far as I am aware model nomenclatures, relating to specific engines underpinning and degree of tune. For instance as used at Bathurst. So successfully.

Re: What is a GT?
GTO is Italian for GRAN TURISMO OMOLOGATO (homologated) used by Ferrari many years ago
GTS is GRAN TURISIMO SPORT
HO in the case of the XY GT Falcons was an abbreviation of Handling Option.
Hope this helps

Re: What is a GT?
Thanks Darryl, now that you mention it I remember that from years ago.
Remember the Galant GTO from the early 70's? That was a cool car.
I knew a guy with a 2.5 litre version of that and it was awesome.

First time I have seen those letters the O and HO described, yes. Thanks Darryl
You learn some thing every day, even after 83 years!!!
PS Note Gran in Italian translates to the word Large in English and Grande in Italian to Grand in English

For the 3000GT, there's a reason for the GT/GTO nomenclature. The original title of the car was the 'Mitsubishi GTO' in Japan. However, in the US, there was already a car model known as the GTO (By Pontiac), so they had to use a different name. The 3000 comes from the engine size (3.0L V6), and they tagged on the GT at the end.
Re: What is a GT?
Unfortunately nowadays the letters on the back of cars rarely mean anything but to differentiate models and what sounds 'cool' and will sell variants.
Take the VRX for example. Model name has no direct meaning but is used to evoke competition with the similar sounding Subaru WRX (Despite not being a direct competitor). And even similar model trim have different names in different markets, such as the GTS in North America (But could also be to differentiate left and right hand drives). GT naming evokes sport in North America.
The use of X nowadays is also to evoke the mysterious such as in X-rays and X-files etc. Lancer has SX, LX, RX and the aforementioned VRX.
The only model badges I'd put on the back of my car however would be DEVO as in De-evolution.
