OEM "DEPO" Style HID Headlamps
I rang & spoke to Tien @ CareWear yesterday just to confirm & clear-up a few things with regard to the OEM PROJECTOR STYLE HEADLIGHTS they sell.
They offer 2 variants:
Both Variants are imported from "DEPO" in Japan who supply Mitsubishi's Lighting.
They meet ADR Australian Design Rules (E-Mark "E4") which means they are legal for use here in Aust.
Variant "1" OEM Projector Style = $495.95
These Headlamp Assy's appear OEM as those found on the Aspire & EVO in Australia.
They "DO NOT" come fitted with any Globes. You need to purchase your own to suit.
Low Beam is a H7 Lamp Socket which allows you to use either a H7 Halogen Globe or a H7 HID Kit.
High Beam is a HB3 Lamp Socket which allows you to use either a 55W or 65W Halogen Globe of your choice.
Parker Globes are a T10 socket as OEM.
Blinker Globes are a T20 socket as OEM.
Variant "2" OEM Projector Style = $795.00
These Headlamp Assy's appear OEM as those found on the Aspire & EVO in Australia.
They "DO" come fitted with "ALL" Globes. You "DO NOT" need to purchase any extra.
Low Beam use the Industry Standard D2S HID Lamp Socket which is the same as OEM. HID Bulbs supplied are MTEC 6000K.
High Beam is a HB3 Halogen Lamp Socket. Halogen Globes supplied are MTEC MT-442 Super White 65W 5000K.
Parker Globes are a T10 socket as OEM. Globes supplied are High Power LED bulbs.
Blinker Globes are a T20 socket as OEM. Globes supplied are Invisible Stealth bulbs.
OEM Mitsubishi Headlight Leveling Switch & Leveling Motors.
Note: Provided your Lancer has the appropriate wiring arrangement within your existing Wiring Harness Plug/Connector.
They come fitted with OEM Mitsubishi HID D2S Ballasts and Bulb Igniters.
..
This pic shows the OEM Ballast fitted under the Headlamp Assembly as OEM fitment on the Aspire & EVO.
This is the same set-up on the $795 Variant "2" model.
All wiring to & from the Ballast is incorporated within the Headlamps wiring loom meaning no external/exposed wiring or Ballast securing within the Engine Bay.
This is "NOT" the set-up with the Variant "1" for $495.95 which require an optional H7 HID Kit.
Industry Standard D2S HID Bulb.
Appropriate Wiring requirement on Existing Wiring Harness.
Leveling Motors / Switch Add-On Pack
PRICE ASSESSMENT:
If you were to purchase the Variant "1" or Projector Headlamps from MARS or Others etc.
Headlamp approx $400 - $450 (Variant "1" $495)
HID H7 Kit approx $150 - $200 (Reputable Brand, Not some Cheap Crap)
HB3 65W 5000K High Beam Halogen Globes approx $50
T20 Invisible Stealth Blinker Globes approx $25
T10 LED Parker Globes approx $25
Total Approx: $650 - $795 ... (Without the Leveling Motors / Switch @ $115)
CONCLUSION: The Variant "2" @ $795 is the CLOSEST & MOST LEGAL to the OEM Mitsubishi Projector Headlamps.
The only part missing from the vehicle, are the OEM Pop-Out Washers, which I've honestly never used because the Headlamps just never get dirty enough in suburban driving to warrant their use.

Nice find. Shame there are no cheaper stock looking ones with projectors. Coz im gonna gut it anyway for better projectors etc... so $500 is too much for me.

Re: OEM "DEPO" Style HID Headlamps
I ordered a "Variant 2" on the weekend and they arrived today. (Hey, they were 20% off, so why not?)
I won't have a chance to fit them for a while, but we plugged one into the loom to check it out, and they are bloody bright. The stock halogens look yellow in comparison. Can't wait to get them installed and go for a good drive at night.

Re: OEM "DEPO" Style HID Headlamps
Great write up Sam
I must say, going to projector head lights was the best thing I ever did, I had aftermarket projectors (the ones with DRL) they been better than the stock (open beam), but going to OEM ones was heaps better, light spread on the road was awesome quick response from HID when cold. Only bad was the high beam, in dark suburbs was good but going on the HWY was a letdown

@ SEB15
Thanks Seb
Yes, those headlamp assemblies use a DS2 HID globe for Low Beam, but unfortunately use a stand alone HB3 55W or 65W for High Beam which isn't going to light-up the highway anywhere near as much as HID's.
The EVO & Aspire headlamp assemblies use the HID globe for Low & High Beam via the inclusion of a solenoid operated shutter which acts like an Eye Lid which is half open at Low Beam and fully open at High Beam.
The other stand alone Halogen globe is used in conjunction with the steering function to illuminate the side path during steering into a corner.
Unfortunately, even though those Headlamp assemblies are a genuine DEPOT product, they "cannot" be identical to those found on an EVO or Aspire due to copyright infringement against Mitsubishi whom requested & paid $$$ for that specific globe design/layout which remains genuine to Mitsubishi vehicles only.
Even though I have the OEM Headlamp assemblies on my Aspire which use the HID's for High Beam, I'd still like the option of more light especially when driving on freeways, but how
I've often thought of converting/modifying the otherwise useless Fog Lamps into Driving Lights, but again how .
They are limited to a Halogen Globe, and become illegal/dangerous to oncoming vehicles if retro fitted with a HID globe
I've been (and still am) at home/hospital for the past 4mths dealing with my relapse of Lymphoma cancer.
However this has allowed me much time to surf EBay & AliExpress where I accidentally located HID Reflector Housing "Direct Mount/Fit" Fog Lamps specific for the Lancer.
These are a Bi-Focal design, meaning they incorporate a High/Low Beam Solenoid allowing you to use them as either Fog Lamps in Low Beam mode or Driving Lamps in High Beam mode
You can choose to use either a Halogen, HID or LED globe in them.
Bifocal Lens Fog Lamp Assembly for Mitsubishi Lancer
I'm going to be using HID equivalent LED globes.
2x45W 90W 9000LM H8/H9/H11 Car LED Headlight Driving Lamp
I'm wiring them to operate via a relay in 3 modes:
Illuminate as "Fog Lamps" when Fog Lights mode is activated. (Low Beam: Solenoid Shutter is Half Open)
Illuminate in "High Beam" when High Beam mode is activated. (High Beam: Solenoid Shutter is Fully Open)
Illuminate in High Beam mode (Solenoid Shutter is Fully Open) when all other lights are "OFF" via the use of an OEM copy switch.
I'll be using this switch.

Re: OEM "DEPO" Style HID Headlamps
i have owned them and they are shit, the projector lense and reflector is among the worst quality i have ever seen the cut off is led of a cut of than a jaggered blur.. i wasnt impress ive but my oem halogens back in
Re: OEM "DEPO" Style HID Headlamps
The lights are installed, along with the levelling switch and everything.
I have two questions:
1) Where do the 2 * 20A fuses supplied as part of the kit go? I've looked through the service manuals, the owner's manual and can't find any reference to where they might go. (There were already 2* 20A fuses for the headlight high/low beam installed - am I right in thinking that's where they would go?)
2) When I turn the ignition on, there's a sound like a relay rapidly flicking on and off for a couple of seconds. Does anyone know why? All the lights work, and the levelling motors do their stuff.
Cheers,
V

Re: OEM "DEPO" Style HID Headlamps
Hey all,
On the drive home this evening, one of the low beams started flickering on and off several times per second - very annoying, and probably dangerous to anyone susceptible to epilepsy...
I checked the wires were all plugged in OK, would it be the bulb or the ballast that's on the way out?
I'm not going to have a chance to pull everything apart and start diagnosing until the weekend... Hopefully I won't have to do any night driving between then and now.
Cheers,
V

Re: OEM "DEPO" Style HID Headlamps
Could be either a bulb or Ballast
If each headlight has its own bulbs and ballast then the easiest thing to do is swap bulbs first and see if the fault change
If not
Then swap ballast and check
If after swap bulb and ballast and it still does it then there's a good chance it's a wiring fault.

While on this topic there is a number of goodies in the link above, in particular about head lights and fittings for all kinds of goodies for headlight from Evo X to lancer and how to do it right

Re: OEM "DEPO" Style HID Headlamps
Hey there,
I tested things today, and it's the bulb that's shot. I tried:
- dodgy bulb in working headlight - flickered like before
- dodgy ballast in working headlight - worked perfectly
A new set of bulbs are on their way. (I might as well replace both of them, as I expect the other one to die now...)
Cheers,
V
As an aside, it's a prick of a job to change the bulbs - having to pull the headlights out just to change the globes is bloody stupid.

Re: OEM "DEPO" Style HID Headlamps
If it's that's hard to swap bulbs out I will stick to my OEM headlight with an LED bar, thanks for the info
