Better Boot Gas Struts

Postby seanomccool » Mon Feb 23, 2015 12:32 pm

Hey All,

the VRX lancer boot is lame to try and open. Nowhere to put fingers, heavy boot etc.

There's struts installed to keep the boot open. I'm wondering if anyone has (or knows of) an alternative , more powerful strut solution, to lift the boot open for me.

It means the boot will be harder to close, but closing is the easy part.

Thanks!

-Sean

more powerful struts wont help, ike u said, struts only hold the boot up.
what u need is a spring to put over them so it springs open a few centimetres.

so far i cant find one the right spring size to do that :(

I know of Harley Davidson valve springs being used before. Couldn't tell you what the spring rate is though. More or less just wound them onto the shaft of the strut. It won't pop the boot open, but will lift it a little higher so you can put your fingers underneath. The way the hinges are designed there isn't really a way to pop the boot open.

You don't want to go too long on the springs otherwise you will have trouble closing the boot. There is very little of the shaft of the strut that is extended past the body of it when the boot is closed and the spring has to sit on/around the shaft.

IMO the main design floor is unlike the sports back model the number plate is not on the tail, a nice and easy place to lift from.

I was actually thinking of some kind of strap that is bolted inside the boot and comes out say 10 cm in the center, enough to hold onto but not enough to flap around too much and wreck the paint work.

andrew, i was thinking of having the spring over the gas cylinder as well as the inner shaft.

Do you know how much of the inner shaft is protruding when completely closed? Might be able to have a spring resting around the inner shaft with it's base on-top of the cylinder. Looks like I'm putting my gf in the boot to take a picture!

very little, like 25mm maybe and then u have the compressed spring thickness to reduce that gap.
this is what zedd is talking about, its not enough imo

so i`m in the market for a spring that goes from the top of the strut to the bottom. maybe 20mm x 300mm sorta

Yeah it would have to be a pretty tough little spring to do that. Let me know if you find the right one.
