help: rules for nsw suspension?

Postby Peterkaay » Sun Apr 27, 2014 8:22 pm

Not sure if this has been covered, but I am finding many different answers for my question so if anyone can shed some light it would be great.

I want to upgrade my lancer ralliart suspension to coilovers but have been told by some it is illegal and defectable (not just from ride height) I have also been told that insurance will void your claim if you have coilovers. I have also been told they are 100% legal and that the only thing is you get defected for height if adjusted too low.

Can they be engineered to be legal with certification? If not anyone know a way of making my RA stiffer and more comfortable around corners?

Thanks in advance

In QLD they are meant to have a mod plate because you are changing a part of the suspension to something that is not something the car originally came with. I've also been told that they need to be at least tack welded on the locking collar so that they can't be adjusted to a different height to what they were certified at.

This being said 99% of people don't get a mod place for them or tell their insurance company about them.

A whiteline sway bar on the rear will stiffen it up in the corners. Also look at strut braces. If cornering is your concern rather than ride height then that is the easy to go
- Self tuned - work in progress - tune revision #16_03
- GS 3 port controlled wooooot :)
- Lowered on Kings
- Black Evo X FMIC/ Evo IX BOV/ Depo HFC/ UR UICP
- Awesome self installed Alpine/JL Audio sound system
- Whiteline Rear Swaybar

Agree Just try an adjustable rear bar first up you will be amazed at the difference.I did that on my old RA and it transformed it.

Sway bars will get rid of the body roll. My car stays flat round bends now with a front and rear sway bar increase.

Some info can be found here.. http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... dards.html NSW related only which further complicates the matter. The main issue with coilovers was, I thought, that they could be adjusted and go beyond the 50mm allowance. So it isn't just ride height itself. But it is a murky area and you can see from the RMS site they haven't even made up their minds definitively. Ask them, get something in writing from them to cover you, even if it's just an email.

From an insurance point of view, if it's legal it should be covered, so back to square one.
