So the OEM bonnet guard is wack. Who the hell wants a clear guard on their bonnet. When I went in for the paint I said I wanted to black out a bonnet Granny shield. The sales assistant laughed and said F' you I have one of those on my WRX.
So I hate paint chips. Another example would be my spats http://clubcj.net/viewtopic.php?t=15533
I wanted bonnet protection, clear vinyl is not bad but I liked the look of one of our sponsors vehicles. I can't find it now, but had his pic of a red lancer as my desktop background for weeks before I gave it a go myself.
I have no idea how he did it, but thought it worth the money.
I ordered a OEM bonnet guard for $60 off ebay then went and bought a can of epoxy enamel (rust guard) from Buzzings. The sales assistant was not convinced it would work, but given I have worked in their paints dept there for +3 years I was fairly confident it would.
I hit the rear side with a standard green scotch bright pad that you probably have for use as a kitchen sink scourer. The perspex is smooth and needs something to adhere to.
I then sprayed the back-side with 4 coats, the first being a very fine layer for adhesion. All coats were done on the back side, NOT THE FRONT.
I tried it out on a spare piece of perspex and through all tests it worked best on the under/back side.
So here is how it looks after two months. On a bonus note I had a stray shopping trolley run into my front end, the guard stopped all the force and required only minor buffing to get the scratches out. If I didn't have it on I would have lost paint work on the bonnet.

bunnishiwa Thanks mate.
Syke, Yeah I would love to do it in nightshade, wouldn't mind hitting the rear lights a tad as well, but Buzzings is a where I works so enamels it was. I think it would have looked even better just tinted a few shades.

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin - you're asking the wrong person - I'm biased!
Someone on here has a full bonnet blackout in carbon-fibre on a blue car (remember that real carbon-fibre is slightly textured, but is glossy, not matte).
doo eet!!!

You need to get the 3M 'magic' tape - it's a really thin, strong cutting tape that goes under the vinyl and lets you cut to an exact line by pulling it up after the vinyl goes over it.
Kinda hard to describe, but it's on the 3M vinyl site...
I did the roof too, it gives it a bit more 'balance'...
