Some states have new laws put in mandating the use of Ethanol in certain fuels.
91 seems to be the most popular that I've seen whilst interstate mixed with 10% ethanol.
But people need to realize that the RON of the fuel is actually lower.
They can use the required maximum 10% to boost the octane level TO 91 RON from another lower number.
Alot of companies are doing this because the cost of fuel could be cheaper and can still charge you the same as regular 91 RON.
For some vehicles their ECU throws weird things.
As far as i know in SA we do not have something like this yet.
And Most premium fuels are not affected unless specifically marked

I can't remember the last time I saw straight 91RON at the bowser without ethanol added - I thought the 91 E10 addition had become law to be honest.
I'm a strong believer in 98 premium fuels for tuned and stock lancers alike.
With a fresh tank of BP Ultimate 98, I can get 5.4L/100km cruising at 60-80km/hr which I simply can't get with 95 and especially not with 91 E10.
The saving at the pump isn't worth the loss in economy.

So it is mixed to provide a minimum of 91RON. which means that the base unleaded fuel could be anywhere above 80RON.
Because I'm going to assume they will use the FULL 10% ethanol and maybe a little more because they can get away with it.
This could possibly explain some things with European cars filling up with 95 RON with (E10) and then running into knock issues.
Can anyone explain why it would be desirable to have at-least the minimum base octane prior to boosting it with additives?

But there needs to be more support from manufacturers and service stations other than "you can put it in there and it'll run I guess"

I usually fill up with Caltex Vortex 98 or Shell V-Power because I can't resist the benefits of supermarket vouchers. And given the car's appetite, I will grab every discount I can. But I use BP Ultimate if the vouchers run out.
For those non-turbo drivers having economy issues, have you considered a tune? I can really vouch for the better consumption when I had this done. It is most noticeable during traffic, most likely due to leaner air-fuel mixture. The RA's factory tune is a bit of a mess, with rich mixture evident through the occasional black soot on the muffler tips, plus more lag than necessary. For NA Lancers, manual tends to use less in the city while CVT is better on a highway cruise due to lower rpm:kph ratio and the stick's lack of a sixth gear.

Its a noisy engine - but a good unit - packs decent middle gear torque - although 1st and 2nd gear feel "coarse" if driving it hard. An engine remapp improves this significantly with smoother power curve and hungry revving from the lights now. Not sure I could live with it without the remapp - but with it its one of the better diesel engines I driven...

I always use BP Ultimate 98.. New Lancer LX... extra additives make it run smooth and never had any engine knock on it... I have had engines knock with caltex 98 on previous cars.
...and the woolies/coles vouchers are a scam... realistically only save $2-4 per tank... pay the extra money for 98 and get at least 40-60kms more per tank, not to mention better performance and keeps the engine cleaner. Do the math, you pay for what you get.
Re mileage - I get 700kms to a tank +- 20kms.
