Loudest thing I've ever heard is the top fuel dragsters at kwinana.
They were so loud I couldn't watch them properly because my eyes would shut instinctively when they launched I was a bit younger then though. I'd like to go again one day...
Don't know what F1 is like but the V8s are pretty tolerable, its just the gunshot on the gear changes that really drives you nuts after a while (and the new mercs also scream, a little painful)

Permanent hearing damage occurs at 127dB, a gunshot is 133dB, and an F1 car is 147db
Apparently an NHRA top fuel dragster is 163dB!!! But throw together 20+ F1 cars all going balls out at the same time... I have a video I took of it, I'll see if I can find it. Also I was in the grandstands so the sound echoed and reverberated

Skip to 0:55 for the start. Excuse the video quality, I compressed it heaps so it wouldn't take so long to upload. Sound should still be good though. You can see the guy in front cringing

Top fuels are like a bomb going off, except for 4-5 seconds instead of a fraction of a second

That video doesn't even do it justice
F1 has never really interested me, its too precise or something. Can't really relate to it either, as fully sick as my lancer is

Now I NEED to watch a top fuel race
Yeah F1 has really gone downhill lately. With the introduction of KERS, DRS, crappy Pirelli tyres, and continual move to smaller engines. Quite sad really. Considering not following the sport in 2014 as they will have V6 engines :S Just reminds me of a bloody Camry. They are killing the sport. When Mark Webber leaves, I leave. I seriously don't care about them wanting to become greener and mindful of cost. The pinnacle of motorsport should not become a series of $100,000 hybrid cars.
Bring back the V10s and scrap artificial overtaking like KERS and DRS and I will be fully interested again.
I've been more interested in Moto2, MotoGP and GP2 a lot more lately. Such good racing
