If you drive sedately then FULL synthetic 5-40 is a great choice. If you track it though, then you should go 10w-50 or even 10w-60.

Isn't 5W-30 the recommended oil?

I used 5W-30 Royal Purple oil in my evo, not a issue. It's fine though dealers would perfer 5W-40 but 5W-30 is fine.

5-30 is ok. Its actually good for fuel consumption. The thicker one (5-40) does not thin and squeeze out of the turbo assembly as easy under enthusiastic driving. So, I would say it is a good all rounder to have 5-40.
Royal Purple has the 10-40 and i found that very good for when i had my evo 7.

will any particular oil 'warm' your car up faster?

i use motul xcess 8100 5w40 and its an absolute pig to drive unless the temp bar is halfway. meaning i usually wake up and turn my car on and let it sit in the driveway for at least 5 minutes. any attempt to dive it before that will chug down the street.

^^ this has everything to do with the warmup maps and/or injector settings in your tune and very little to with your oil, I would say.
Frequently E85 is a bit cranky for a minute or two after you start up, but 98 *should* be able to get fairly smooth from the get go.
