Installing DRLs Strips

Postby Metalstrix » Fri Dec 14, 2012 4:19 pm

Edit: Thanks to the person for bringing my post back! ^^

G'day Fellow Lancer owners :D

I'm going to be installing a pair of 'Daytime running lights' (DRL) strips on my Lancer very soon. At the moment I'm waiting for them to come from the US. I got the idea from seeing Audis, Holden Clubsports and Deanos car with them. Not only do they make the car look cooler, but it's also a safety tool. :P So why not? get one? :D

Deanos post: http://clubcj.net/viewtopic.php?t=3933

After doing a bit of research reading Deano's post and talks with my new friend Sam, I've come to the conclusion that I will be purchasing a pair of 1ft DRLs and installing them onto the car.

Originally, I was going to replace the VR fog lights with the DRLs. But it turns out that we can't use DRLs as fog lights since they're not powerful enough and the cops will be on my back about it too.
So, what we're doing now is (again) Deano's idea: Putting the strips ON (and above) the fog lights so I can keep both lights.

However, there's one more thing I need help with before buying and installing them. Sam said the following:

If you want them on with the Ignition, but want then to go off when the other lights are turned ON .... then they have to be wired through a Relay connected with the wiring that already feeds the Parkers Main Beam Lights.

Would this be something I would be able to do with instructions? Or is this something that a Technician should do? Because I want to make it so I can turn them off when nighttime comes.

There's this tutorial:

Would it be similar to that?

Where can I get information to install the strips? :D

Relays are easy, just gotta put it somewhere safe.
You just buy the relay already prepared and connect it to the things you want.

Mine are basically the same as Deano's. I just have a switch in the footwell for mine though. Heard enough stories of people getting in trouble for having DRLs, even factory ones, so I only use them occasionally.

Awesome! Good to know that it's simple. So when I install it, what's the actual switch that you use to turn it off and on?

I just use some random toggle switch, I don't remember where I got it from, maybe the same place I got the DRLs from... I don't have it in a special place though, its just loose on the floor :P

I installed DRLs on my car the other week. I bought a NARVA toggle rocker switch (part number 63040BL) which fits perfectly in the side panel. Ill post a pic up for it. Mine is wired to the cigarette lighter. Hope that helps

Certain DRL'S look really nice and stand out if fitted correctly. I wouldn't be suprised of ALL makes and models will have DRL'S as standard in the years to come, I believe it's compulsory in certain parts of Europe?

Oh my god! So that's what they can be used for! I was literally wondering what those other two blocks were used for and now you've answered it for me! That's brilliant. I think I'll have that as a switch too! :D:D
