Fix it up thread

Postby Alixxandar » Sat Aug 04, 2012 12:54 pm

Finally got some money together, and the tailgate repairs begin.

So, I got my new bumper yesterday and it was raining, today is hopefully the day where it'll get installed.

So, Here's where it started:

And the new bumper:

I managed to get the swap done today. The rain passed, and turned out to be great weather :)

The two bumpers side by side (At this point, I'd managed to pop the dents out with a bit of boiling water. It was still cracked on the inside and top though, with damage to the paint work and one of the mounting brackets on the bottom snapped off. Might not look so bad, but definitely needed replacing):

Car up on stands with the rear bumper removed. FYI: The best place to jack it up to get stands under the chassis rail is right in the middle of the rear cross member. Doesn't affect your wheel alignment

Still on the stands with the new bumper installed and mud guards back on:

Down off the stands now, looking 100% better than before.

Just gotta get that boot lid sorted, and it'll be looking good as new :)

Got rear ended, that damaged the bumper, and did the boot by backing into a tree

So, not too long after fixing the back, I hit a Roo :(

Word of warning, this is a long post. I had a busy day :)

Here's the damage after I taped it up to get the car home:

Image

Got it home and took the tape off, the bumper and fender were wrecked, the RH Splash guard inside the wheel arch was somewhere on the highway and the headlight was long gone

Image

Got the car up on stands for the second time in a month and took the bumper off, to find out that my washer bottle had also made a run for it. The bracket on the left that holds the fender in place was bent right back (at least 90 degrees) In this photo I'd already beat it almost in to place. Those styrofoam blocks were interesting, I assume they're to hold the form of the bumper to stop it bending inwards in a light impact.

Image

A shot from the side to show the damage to the fender; this had actually cracked the metal - I almost snapped the end off just trying to remove it.

Image

Front of the car completely stripped, we had a rent inspection coming up too, wasn't sure how they'd take to a car in pieces on the driveway, turns out they understood though and were fine with it.

Image

Lovely pile of broken parts :)

Image

I shifted those in to the shed before the inspection, probably helped with the "exterior presentation" section. Parts came in to Bunbury Mitsubishi yesterday, managed to fit all this in my mums Fiesta hatch

Image

Got the fender and the bumper on after a couple of hours work, still need to "Persuade" the bracket for the fender a little more, it's not quite in place yet - still 8mm off where it should be

Image

Bonnet back on now, doesn't look too bad with a black bumper. Still gonna get it painted, but instead of vinyl wrapping the centre, I'll get it painted Matte black and then do the Wheel arch moulding chrome nose mod :)

Image

Just a shot from the other side to show that the black bumper doesn't look too bad - the previous picture was missing a light, and had a black fender. It didn't illustrate my point very well

Damn. Curious... how much of this is money out of your pocket?

All of it out of my own pocket, for a few reasons:

The first repair (Bumper) Cost me $800 all up, for bumper and paint. My basic excess is $1500 + $300 young driver excess, I do this to keep my premium down, cause other wise it's ridiculously high.

Second repair (Roo damage) has cost me $1600 so far, plus $500 for paint when I get it done. That totals $2100, so really, I'd only save myself $300. I chose not to this for 3 reasons:
    1. If I went through insurance to save myself the $300, it'd have to go to a panel beater/body shop, be assessed, then parts ordered, then repaired on their own time, not including weekends. I ordered the parts and got it done in a week (minus headlight)

    2. If I went through insurance, I'd have to have the stock headlight as a replacement. Even though I'd only be capped at paying $1800, I can't justify paying the $380+gst that mitsubishi charge for a headlight under any circumstances, when I can get an after market set with projectors, Philips diamond vision bulbs, LED DRL's and CCFL Halo's for a total of $439 inc. Gst.

    3. I'd have to go with a standard paint job if insurance were doing it. They'd only agree to pay for the basics, and if I wanted more than that it'd be out of my pocket anyway. This way, I can get my bumper painted with a centre blackout (like what people do with vinyl wrap)

All of these incidents have been on separate occasions, so it's not like I can make 1 claim and only pay $1800, I'd have to make 3 claims and pay the excess for each one. When I come to do the boot lid repair, I've sourced a hatch with spoiler, tinted windows, inside section of lights, wiper and all wiring intact for $350, so again, way cheaper than insurance.

Still think it sucks that the MARS online store was down
Also relocated my number plate, so before paint I gotta get that centre section filled in where the plate holes are
