Go back to 2008 launch, youd be hard pressed at that time to find a better car than the CJ. If you need a car at this time, you buy what you can. But honestly seeing as you bought a Lancer in 2011, I think I would have bought a SP25 if I bought a car last year. So at 2012 June if you were looking for a car, I think a FT-86 would have got my vote.

I said just a little :P

Anyways, I generally go with what I like. I sold the CJ Lancers when they first came out. And I think they're awesome cars. But @ $30K, a Japanese RWD coupe, for me, wins hands down!

I know im tempted to get one and make it a track day / go fast project car because it is pretty cheap compared to say my RA or an Evo. I get what you mean though about how it seems to lose some of the magic because of the price tag. But i think it might be a good thing. maybe this will mean that car prices in the future wont be so extreme

It's a good car for the price tag and despite it being cheap for the enthusiasts, it also gives the car access to a lot of non enthusiasts. A lot of young people who previously only considered your mazda 3, lancer, impreza, civic etc. will now give this car a lot of consideration as they'll think its a "sports car" in a similar price range to those other cars...why not just go for this one?

No offence to anyone here, but you can see how many of those cars you see around that are really poorly done up. I guess I'll just be disappointed to see your FT 86/BRZ rolling around with chrome bob jane wheels lol

If you think about it, its rare to see a poorly done up type r, evo, sti etc. (of course you do have one occasionally) and I think this is largely to do with their higher price tags. People who can afford and want to buy them generally are enthusiasts who know about the car rather than a lot of people who I think will be interested in the FT86/BRZ because its a "sports car" and its "cool" and they can afford it lol.

Just my opinion

Very valid point. Hopefully, insurance will make it harder.

But then again...

hahaha good point Ray. I see where you're coming from. It does leave a bit of apprehension for us though as car enthusiasts. You're right I definitely do not want to see tacky cars. I guess we can only hope for some good taste in people who do get this car... which i know probably will not happen and there ill be many cringes. (Perhaps we can start a new comp soon - who can spot the tackiest FT86/BRZ :P )

Yeah..haha heres to hoping you won't see too many poorly done up FT86/BRZ's! Despite that though, I'm really looking forward to reading up on the amazing build threads that I'm sure die hard enthusiasts will muster up!

Haha that's brilliant!

Seriously though, you might actually get some good discounts on buying a few of them at one time, like fleets do.

I can only assume you're talking about buying a brand new car for a track day / go fast project. But why would you do that?

There are plenty of cheaper ways to go fast (faster than an 86) for less $$$ (or similar).

2nd hand evo 5/6 are around 15k.
2nd hand IX's 30 to 35k.

Already a better track platform. Tuning capability of those is well known and easy. Re-tune for E85 and up boost, a cool 240kw in awd platform.

Compare that to the 86/BRZ......tuning capability? Unknown. Boxer engine + high compression......hmm..

Don't get me wrong i really like this car. But for a 'cheap' way onto the track. This isn't it. I can't wait for people to bring these to a track and get smashed by just about everything else. You want a real cheap, fun track car - 2nd hand mx-5.

Again, don't get me wrong. I do really like this car. I just think people are looking at it the wrong way. It isn't going to be some awesome track car. It is a good sports cars. Most of them will live out their days on the roads much like new MX-5's, RX-8's, 350z/370z....

Give it time though and in 5+ years time they might make a good entry level track car.
