I think you know my background so perhaps I'm entitled to comment about this. Forgive me for the lack of good news but I report things as I see it.

In the US, the leading Universities are known as the Ivy League.
In the UK, the leading Universities are known as the Russell Group
Here in Australia, the leading Universities are known as the Group of 8.

The recognized Global Rankings of Universities is done by Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Institute of Higher Education. The list of the top 500 Universities in the World can be seen in this PDF List.

Wikipedia provides a listing of Australian Universities which profiles the top Australian Universities.

From that list, the University of Queensland is ranked 3rd in Australia behind only ANU and University of Melbourne. The Director of Science at the Australian Synchrotron where I do my research work was originally from there. So I know that University of Quensland is a VERY good Uni.

However, in the case of QUT, it is not amongst the top 16 in Australia and also not even in the top 500 in the world. From the Wikipedia article link, you can see the 2005 Teaching Performance Rankings which is a fair measure of a Uni's ability to EDUCATE only and it ranks QUT as 31 in the country. University of Queensland is ranked 5th.

QUT started its existence as the Brisbane School of Arts was established in 1849. Then it merged with a couple of technical colleges (something like ITEs in Singapore) becoming Queensland Institute of Technology before in 1989 becoming QUT.

From a Singaporean perspective, I know that QUT is reknowned for their IT course as they have a strong alumni of IT professionals. Despite it's lack of awards and lack of ranking, it is recognised by the Singaporean Government for its credentials. You can see a list accepted here.

Being not capable is one thing but when you're paying good money for an education, you do need to assess what you're paying for. The Universities sell a product (that degree). You need to assess whether putting money into it is going to help you achieve what you want to do.

With enrollment rates dropping across Australia, my suggestion is to apply elsewhere. At the end of the day, student numbers are the most important numbers for any university and a degree is only as good as the person obtaining it. RMIT is reputable in Melbourne and so is Monash. Has he tried applying there?

Your nephew is doing Masters right? (I implied from the 1 year course length) so I guess it's different.

I lived in Sg for 22 yrs before leaving and since leaving, I can't say I ever looked forward to going back. Kind of like the frog out of the well syndrome. And gardening was never my cup of tea... .

That uni list is not very accurate considering Bond university is ranked in the top catagory in the world yet it dosn't even get a mention. Could be also because it is private. Lots of eye candy there as well.

Sorry, reading this post from a while ago.. Why isn't Bond on that list?!?!? I thought it was well up there too...

Pity me, I went to uni, twice, but both poverty-pack universities.. just like my poverty pack car!

I am sure QUT would afford a prestige I will never know !!!

Good luck to him.
