The exact rule would vary by state, but I see plenty of Lancer Evos and supercars going around with side licence plates mounted. So it would be legal, it's just how angled, positioned, visible, etc. :)

I think in QLD it has to viewable from an angle of 45 degrees on either side at a distance of 25m. I asume most other states would probably be similar.

I believe it's the same requirements in NSW, .
In saying that, I have my number plate cable tied to my grill and I've never come into any strife.

Best off checking with MainRoads or their equivalent just to make sure.

Needs to be secure. Double sided tape wouldn't be accepted as the plate can easily come off. Zipties or bolts :)

Aspir3 (Troy) down in SA has his Velcroed and from what I read it has never come off...
Whether or not using tape is strong enough or legal I'm not too sure
You can buy the side mount plate from body kingdom in QLD or on eBay however, the measurements for one hole Is bout 2cms off... Just simply drill a new hole and it's all fixed
Tadz0rz and 13EZY have side mounted the number plate have a look at their garage

If a cop wants to be picky they can argue that the plate is not in the stock position etc.

A side mount plate is illegal due to not being able to see the plate at 45deg like has been said already.

The pitch on the lancer bar means that you have to have a pretty large mount to meet the requirements.

It is one of those things, if you treat people with respect you may get away with it, but it is not legal.

My plates are on the side and have not been pulled over yet by any police.

if i pass any police they just look and do nothing else.

I got pulled over by the cops and politely asked to increase the angle which I did. no dramas since :)
its perfectly legal as long as the requirements mentioned by Zedd82 are met.
as Lazy eye mentioned the front bar has a fair slope which makes a side mount stand out a fair bit too

Yeah as stated above QLD legislation says:
Veiwable from 45 degrees from center of the plate and veiable from either side of the car. So if you get the proper mount for it which brings the plate flush with the front just a bit offset im going to say that would be legal.

as for taping it to the bumper with a slight bend in it. No i don't believe this would be legal.

And the Alfas if you look closely even though it is side mounted, it is almost straight, and not at an angle...
