Choosing the Right Engine Oil

Postby SAM-24A » Thu Jan 26, 2012 8:53 am

Not all of us are Mechanics and/or have Access to Reliable & Concise Auto Info .... *noidea*

Many of us often question which Oil should or/is the Best to use in my Engine .... :?
eg: Mineral, Synthetic, Semi Syn

What does the "0W - 00" Numbers mean & how do/can I relate that to my Driving Attributes .... :?
eg: Daily Distances, Climatic Temps, Driving Style

Often thou .... we end up with more Myths than Solutions .... *doh*

Here is a 4:39min Video posted by "SuperCheap" that explains & answers these questions in simple & understandable terms/language.
Worth Watching.

Personally as i only keep my cars a short time, and with the drivetrain warranty that mitsubishi provide,im happy with whatever the dealer uses.
If i was keeping the car 5+ years or longer i would seriously consider using better quality oils. :)

I usually use the 5w40 or 5w50 in my car. Only use penrite Aswell. Always been good to me after every oil change and they are 100% australian made :)

I used the Castrol Edge Sport 5w30 last service and the engine ran quieter and smoother vs. the factory oil. Just got some more as service is due in Feb / March. :D
Love that car!

To be honest 0W40 is OTT for a NA car.
You will find that a 5W30 would be more than appropriate for your use.

I might suggest as well that '0w' is too thin for our cars, according to manufacturers specifications. But being in Gold Coast, you might just be able to get away with it in hot weather, Not recommended for those in colder climates though.

I know its a pretty standard oil, but I've always used Castrol Magnatec which I think is a 5W-30 - never had any issues and its often on special too :)

Technically, Castol claims it's an improvement with the 'titanium' moniker, the cynics will tell you it's the same stuff in new packaging for a higher price.

I did notice one of the bigger franchise chain outlets around me were clearing out the older "Edge Sport" bottles at a lower price. Perhaps you could try one of the bigger retailers near you - although Perth being the most remote city in the world might work against you.

The dealer used Magnatec on my previous Lancer, which was 10W-40 semi-synthetic. We changed to Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 full synthetic and the engine ran lighter. Ralliarts use this spec from what I know.
