Let's put it this way:
i. You can only use either NOT both. If you buy the Injen CAI, you'll have to remove your stock air intake + whatever filter cartridge you have.
ii. The engine block takes in air to aid in combustion. You know when you do a charcoal bbq? How you FAN THE FLAMES? It's to get more air flow to aid in the burning.
iii. The K&N Filter replaces the stock filter cartridge. It has a million mile guarantee and provides increased flow due to the material and mesh design. The reason for this mesh is to trap small particulates in the air making it through to the combustion chamber.
iv.The Injen CAI is a Pod shaped filter placed near the foot of the car *See marked point in Panther's diagram*. It is less restrictive in its mesh design. It is placed down there due to the science concept that Hot air rises and cold air sinks thus cold air in any environment should be nearer the ground. Thus the name COLD AIR INTAKE.
My thoughts -
It's not really Cold Air since on a hot day in the summer of 42deg C. I doubt there's much cold air then nearer the ground anywhere. You will need the hydro sock as well for rainy days to prevent the pod filter from being soaked. The mesh though on these pods tend to be less restrictive and you do get better flow but I can't justify the cost since I won't be track racing my car.

oh, and do they effect fuel economy?
CAI on a cold day for sure.
Yes they do. CAI provides better economy. Once again on a COLD day. On a Wet day you again have the problem with puddles and then it may not be the case.
