Car Sevice Oil

Postby Ricksville » Fri Oct 07, 2011 5:29 pm

Well i got my car serviced yesterday 15000, I took my own oil as per usual. But when i told him the weight 5w30

The Mitsubishi service person (Sydney city) told me that there had been instances of engine failure with low cold weight oil and Mitsubishi was cracking down on people using low cold weight oil.

He basically said that 0w40 synthetic had caused premature engine failure and 5w wasn't much better and they where now using 15w with there services.

Anyone heard similar stories?

I have capped price servicing so regardless if i take my oil or i use there's its the same price. Makes me think there maybe some truth behind this

Hey Rick,

I had my 15000 service last week and I brought my own oil (5W-30) and I got the oil price refunded from my capped price service.

They didn't say anything about it and were happy to refund.

I'm happy using 5w30. I kept an eye on the oil level over the previous period with out seeing it burn any.

I was just wondering what was behind it all.

0w-40 is too thin. I agree. However, 5w-30 should be alright. I run Motul 5w-40 fully synthetic in mine since the first service, and have had no complaints.

0w-40 is thicker than 5w-30

Sorry, I should rephrase, 0w40 is too thin for our Lancers (NA) on start up in the cold. But yes, it is thicker once at operating temperature than 5w30.

i had my RA serviced at 30,000KM and they place magnatec pro 5w-40, so are dealers making things up and deciding themselves what oil is best?
- GST basemap
- AMS boostpill
- Works High flow drop in air filter
- Evo X BPV
- UR UICP

Ching, you have nothing to worry about. 5w40 is OK for your Ralliart. Dealers have a range of oils available to them to use. In this case, Magnetec Pro is a semi synthetic and is the closest thing the dealer has that is within spec, as Castrol Magnetec Pro does not have a 5w-30.
