The psychology of the CJ

So I've come to notice a sort of psychological aura that comes with our Lancers. Recently after getting a few exterior mods here and there, my friends have driven and sat in my car with the impression that they are in a sports car. Despite the fact that I haven'd made any performance mods, just the look alone is enough to convince them otherwise.

On the flip side, my mum drives a CJ and by no means does she see her car as anything sporty whatsoever. I guess I just love and appreciate the versatility this car exhibits and the fact that it can easily be represented as a sporty looking car, family car, company car, or even as just a vehicle to get from A to B.

How do you guys view your car?
Personally I see mine as somewhat sporty but with clean mods. Kind of like a normal car with added features as though it is a special release edition but nevertheless a respectable car for all ages.

I'd love to hear what you guys think :)

I view it as kinda sporty. Has clean looks and a nice rear end and a aggressive front. Driving the cvt in manual mode gives it a sporty feel to it as well, however most autos these days are going that way.

To be honest, I view Lancers as general to be quite ricer and tryhard. I think this stigma is more associated with past Lancer series and the CJ lancer has improved on this quite significantly and perhaps has more "street cred". However, I guess the Lancer name sorta still has this reputation. I do know a lot of my friends who are car enthusiasts pay me out for getting the Lancer, and I must say, if I didn't have the restrictions I had when purchasing the car (parents wanting me to get brand new car, P plate restrictions etc.) I would have gone another route.

i guess it was when nundah mitsu had 2 evos on display on the street straight from winning a rally with sponsor decals all over them, soooo cute :)

When I first bought mine we were showing it to the extended family and they were all raving about how sporty is was. Suppose it was the spoiler and the alloys giving the impression. It is a sporty little number but still a comfy sedan.

But then again my 121 Bubble feels all sporty too when you're driving her. I'm positive she thinks she's really a Mazda sports car or something. She did replace a 929 Coupe (pointy nose RX4 shape) and she used to sit in the driveway with an old Series 1 RX7. Sort of like my little silky x thinking he was a big dog because his best mate was a kelpie :)

Sometimes I drive the Lancer like an old granny but other times I drive her like she's a sports car. It is versatile like that. It is a car for all ages.

I did get a little flak about getting a Lancer. They do have the ricer rep but I told the knockers to go bury their head and that I bought the best car, with the most stuff, for the money I had to spend.

One woman, recently, was carrying on about it and asked my daughter if it had a spoiler you could hang clothes on. My daughter giggled and said yes. The woman couldn't believe that a 47 year old mother of three almost grown kids would buy something like that. (And yes I know the SX doesn't have a spoiler that big but it is rather out there and not exactly small.) I told her I got it because it was fun. Also she couldn't believe that I bought such an out there colour. I said that I could have got it in Orange. That would have been a bit more out there. What's wrong with bright blue. It's so pretty.

I love my car. She's sporty and comfy and makes me very happy.

Anyway, Ray, which path would you have gone down? My hubby wanted me to get an SV6, Berlina or SS but they were almost twice the price. I wanted Jap anyway but the SS would have been fun.

its all the past Lancers that give the CJ a Bad name.

I don't view the old lancers as ricer per se... More as a 'fun' car that you're not meant to take too seriously.

The new ones can be whatever you want them to be now. Sports car, comfortable daily, leather wonderland, whatever :)

The biggest problem to the image if you ask me are the people who do standard mods (lowering, bigger wheels, an exhaust) and then act like its a 'true' sports car. No. Those are the people that make us all seem like poor try-hards.


Everybody seems to have opinions of mitsubishi in all its forms, but most people agree the new lancer is pretty good looking, and we all know that with the simplest mods it can make a massive difference to the look, even to the point of non-car people thinking its a sports car.

(not talking about ralliarts and evos here obviously)

Well my dream p plate car has always been a S2000..but I also wouldn't have minded an Integra DC5R and Civic EP3R. Shame about the P plate rules and having no turbos etc.

I think in our car scene now, the term ricer has gone well beyond the simple "modding a slow car so that it looks like a fast car". I think it has been largely influenced by peoples perceptions, which in turn was influenced by social media such as "Initial D". If you think about it, a stock AE86 isn't all that quick but when people mod it, it suddenly screams respect and street cred but when you have say a modded Hyundai Tiburon, which isn't all that slow stock, it's suddenly ricer.

I bought my MY11 4 months ago as I needed a new daily. It ticked all the boxes for me, cruise control, safety features etc.
Great car and I think I made the right choice.
As far as the ricer thing goes, well I come from the other side of the tracks and also own a 1970 XW Fairmont with a 393 CI Windsor so its basically polar opposite to the "tuner" scene and I dont buy into this ricer crap anymore.
Im 33 years old and could care less about what a pimply faced kid with lots of magazines has to say about the car that takes me to work and to the shops, day in day out, with just that little piece of style.
Here is the enemy and its heart !! hahaha
