Evo X on Skid Pan

Postby QUICK EVO » Mon Jul 25, 2011 1:28 pm

Hi everyone

I did a skid pan day yesterday with the folks at Evo OZ and thought it might be of interest to post the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKXdt8ZDo3A

Both me and my mate (we shared the car) were blown away by the sheer ability of the X. Once we figured out how to do it properly, it was really easy to get the car sideways and keep it there. For a mediocre driver like me, it really makes me look good. There was another X there and he was flinging it around like a pro-drifter.

My first few rounds were full of understeer, I was getting frustrated because I wasn't getting the procedure right. But once you get it right, it's like a light switch and soon the slides were coming like no tomorrow.

Essentially, the procedure is:
- Turn ASC to 'off off'
- Turn S-AWC to gravel mode
- Build up speed to about 60 km/h
- Start the turn by flicking into it, then immediately throttle off and pull the handbrake. Keep the handbrake on until you feel the back get loose.
- Handbrake off. I was told that the centre differential disconnects when the handbrake is engaged, so don't keep power on and handbrake on at the same time.
- At the same time, steer into the corner quickly until the desired slide angle is reached.
- Start countersteering so that you don't spin out due to oversteer (this was the hardest part to get right)
- Feather the throttle to keep the car going sideways! :-)

I have new found respect for my car. :-) It is just so controllable and predictable at the limit. I now understand why the stunt drivers at Movieworld use the Evo X as their weapon of choice!

Not too bad, they put diesel with the water on the skid pan so it's quite slippery and you basically aquaplaning most of the way.

I did this before and found it great. Were you guys running stock X's? I found it difficult to get the drift going initially but with a bit of help (Brett Middleton) we were able to get the rear sliding in a continuous slide.

The ironies of life. Reminds me of when I got my first full time job at 18 and suddenly could afford to buy gaming consoles (and games). Bought a DS Lite, PSP, Xbox360, Wii and an iPod Video (that's what was 'in' back then). In the end the only thing I got good usage out of was the iPod since I could use it on the bus or train to work, and even then, I was usually asleep on public transport since I got motion sickness easily.

Looks like a really nice way to get some fun and not hurting the tires too much.If only I have an evo x, highly doubt my lancer would be powerful enough for that slide and being a fwd :(

by the way, any idea on how the road circuit on Mt Cotton is being run?

Jace: My issue is kids... they take up all my free time...

Kelvin: Its not all about power, it about technique... I remember guys in DC2Rs going into drift comps... Just get on that handbrake ;)

Sachin : You inspired me! Probably will go and have a play when I'm free

As mentioned by Chris, would be a good idea if we plan for a 1/2 day trip to the skid pan!
