I did the same thing to mine ages ago. Only I bought red ones and it turns out they're much more orange than red.
It works out though because it matches the dash lights perfectly
(they were a crappy chinese brand, they all still work though surprisingly. Its been more than a year)
Whatever you do don't skimp on quality on whatever you put in your front grille. If they're not bright enough then its a waste of money
You'll want some 3M double sided outdoor tape to hold them on too unless you're going for a more elegant method

You can put switches there, sure. You could also use a button but it'd have to be the right kind (one that works like a switch) ie a toggle button.
People have talked about wanting to use OEM lancer buttons but you can't. They only transfer current if you hold them down.
So if you want to fit it to those empty spots then you're going to need to drill a hole in the blank cover or replace it with something else that fits...

If you have 2 switches/buttons and run them sequentially they'll both have to be on for your lights to come on. Could get a little confusing.
