Does anyone have any pets that aren't common or are weird? How much did you shell out initially and what are your approximate maintenance costs?
I want a unique pet that is not too hard to maintain and is able to be bought in a store in Australia/Perth. I have Googled it and most of the suggestions are on pets which are not available here or are extremely hard to find, such as hedgehogs. Also not too big on the stink factor...
Any suggestions?

Only have one though, poor thing..
I've got 3 ferrets which we bought from the NSW Ferret Welfare Society.
Cost us $350 all up which included all vaccinations and desexing.
If you get them desexed then you do not need to worry about them dying from coming on heat (all mine are female) and the other major advantage is they loose about 95% of their scent after only a few weeks.
As mentioned above, they feed on high grade dry kitten biscuits and raw meat every day, with a chicken neck once a week to keep their teeth clean.
They're awesome pets, and we'll probably get more in the future.
I've also had scorpians. 1 desert and 1 rainforest. They were very easy to keep and only cost about $30 - $50 each. Feed them a cricket once per week and keep the enclosure (fish tank) humid and they're fine. You will have to check with your local authorities though, as each state is different. In NSW you don't need a license but in other states you do.

i have a mate who has a wombatcute little thing, but dont let it run into you flat out, they will knock you flying.
I use to be know as a wombat.
Not sure if it was because of the way I looked or what wombats eat? Something about eats, roots and leaves.
I like the sound of Ferrets. Not sure they would be suitable for kids. I fear the kids would hurt them.

6 and 2. Kids tend to be a little rough and clumsy. They climb all over my dog. I am constantly watching the kids to protect my dog. Kids are normally at fault when the family pet bites them. Dogs will protect themselves if they are constantly getting hurt or teased. It is so important to have an animal with a good breeding and nature. I looked what dog to get before choosing a boxer dog. They are boy stress but very good with kids.
Remember when purchasing a pet you have that pet for its whole life. A dog for example may live for 15 years so think how much your life will change in 15 years before purchasing.

i saw an echidna at work today. he was really friendly and not scared of humans at all. came right up to us and sniffed our feet. one of my employees wanted to pat it and take it home!
u could go a native animal, but u will need to get a permit for it. i once wanted to get a wallaby or sugar glider. every now and then i see them adevertised in the paper.
at the moment i have a pet rabbit which my bf looks after, shes pretty cute but not trained to do anything other then eat and dig. i am thinking about getting a guinea pig this weekend, they r so cute!
another pet i would LOVE to get is a minature horse, just have to look into council regulations.
if you are worried about the stink factor, get something that can stay outside, or clean the cage out regularly. my rabbit lives inside and she doesnt smell at all, but her cage is cleaned out everynight.
best bet would be the check with your local council to see what animals u r allowed to have and what u need permits for. also try places other then pet shops, such as the RSPCA or animal welfare league. they not only sell cats and dogs, but some places have birds, turtles, ferrets, ducks.
whatever you get, do lots of research before. a pet is for life!
