I saw OFEYS posts but buying the key itself is just half the riddle - and I wasn't sure if the dealer will code a key I supply, and who can cut them.
I have since spoken to a dealer who said that mitsu's supply the key already cut to them, and that they just program it to the car (their charge for this $60, on top of key supply + cutting costs)
Wanted to know how dire got on in his situation.

About Mitsu pre cutting a key to dealers, I can tell you categorically that isn't true.

That's what the spare parts guy said - and the cost for them to do that was $115.. I thought it was bit odd but who am I to know..
I'm guessing the best way to go forward is to purchase the key, get a seperate locksmith to cut it (if they can.. have had varying responses), and the dealer to program it for $60?

130 for the key
??? for cutting
60 for programming
your total will probably end up being close to the $220 "ish" mark depending on how much the dudes at the locksmith will charge you for the key
Also have you tried a lockmith to see if they can source the key ? they are doing quite alot of new cars there and they know what dealers are charging and generally try and do it lower.

wait for dire's experience but I think so.
I don't know if the locksmith can also program Mitsu Keys.
I've seen those locksmiths in shopping malls claim they can give you a new Holden programmed key? So perhaps they can do Mitsu ones too? I'm sure they can cut them.
I saw this guy do some work before.

He did a Holden in under 20mins.

Thanks for all the responses so far Hopefully Dire updates us if he's gone any further.
I tried a locksmith in a mall (Westfield Marion for those in SA) and was told they couldn't do anything at all as 'Mitsubishi don't release the codes for 5 - 10 years'
Another locksmith said they could cut and code a generic key for $250 - key would only unlock manually and start car - no remote lock / unlock / boot buttons
