Rear window tinted only on new cars.

Postby Latino_Ralliart » Thu Mar 17, 2011 9:40 pm

Hey all,

It's annoying when I noticed my car came with only the rear windows tinted from factory. Why not just tint the whole friggin thing!!

Anyways what do you guys do. Do you remove the rear tints and do everything again. Or just tint the front to match rear.

Also anyone know what's the darkest legal tint available is?

Cheers

I think the rear is privacy glass? Thats why there is a strong difference, the fronts get a lighter tint.
Red goes faster. MUCH faster.

It's called "privacy tint" ...... matching it on the front would be illegal as it is too dark.

Didn't stop me doing it, though ....... 8)

Like mattigins said, the glass itself has been darkened from factory (privacy glass) - it doesn't block out any uv/heat. What I did first was to match the fronts to the back, but during summer I noticed that it allowed a fair bit of heat through (and the puppies found it pretty uncomfortable)

The solution was to put a light tint (50%, but you can go lighter at 70% or even a clear tint) to stop the uv and block out some of the heat :)

This is incorrect Bill. All the glass in all the lancers are UV protected including the windscreen.

I too was told by my dealer that I would need to fit a clear tint over the rear to protect against UV.

You just need to fit tint to the front 2 windows to match the rear for looks only.

I agree it looks silly with clear glass on the front and privacy on the rear.

really? i was definitely told otherwise! well, you learn something new everyday. must admit, while it may block uv, it doesn't block any heat, i found a noticeable difference when putting a 50% tint over the privacy glass

Tint is really only there to make the car look good and/or for privacy.

The other effects of cooling and additional protection against UV are only placebos. Normal glass should block out most of the harmful UV rays, whilst the tint may actually cause indoor heat to be lost more slowly than normal.

Darkest "LEGAL" tint in NSW is 35% VLT (visible light transmission)

The Factory Privacy Glass is equivalent to 25-30% VLT.

So tinting your front door windows with 25% or 30% tint would make it "ILLEGAL" whilst 35% would make your front door windows appear lighter than the rears.

Whatever you do however, apply UV block-out clear film on the rears.

There seems to be a few differing opinions as to wheather or not the rear door windows and the rear screen is factory UV glass or not.

I have been told it is not, whereby others have knowledge that it is.

Therefore:
If it IS NOT Factory UV glass and you apply clear UV block-out = less heat inside you Lancer = "WIN" :)

If it IS factory UV glass and you apply clear UV block-out = even less heat inside your Lancer = "WIN WIN" :D

I am getting mine done tomorrow morning. Clear film on the rear & still trying to make up my mind whether I go 30% or 35% on the front. I will look at samples of both & decide on the day.

I was told the rears have no UV protection.

I think it's Infrared light that transmits the heat, not UV ?

Correct me if wrong .....
