Replacing Battery, Recommendations?

Postby tadz0rz » Mon Dec 27, 2010 11:52 pm

Hey guys

My battery is pretty much munted. So munted if I leave the car on acc for half an hour with the stereo off, the battery will die and I need the car to be jump started.

Pretty much because of the massive draw my stereo has had on the battery, its affected its life...

Now, im looking for a replacement...I have a fair sized stereo, its not the biggest one going around, but im just curious as to if I should replace it with something similar to the stock one, or ramp it up a little bit.

The only reason why im considering something thats similar to the standard one is because I've got a budget to work with, im trying to keep it around the $150 mark. Anything less than that is fine, I just want to be sure Im getting what im paying for.

I dont know what im actually looking for in a battery, so any guidance would help :)

Thanks guys :)

You are best to get a bigger battery if you are running accessories with the engine off.

You are best to get the biggest that fits. Check the cc of the battery. Any auto store will be able to recommend a battery for you.

Also it is not a good idea to run the battery flat as it will shorten the life.

You could also run a second battery just for your accessories. This will stop the main battery going flat. It takes a little effort to wire up, but once you find the info you will be fine.

I agree with Troy.

There are batteries out there that are designed for high accesory cars, Optima batteries I believe it's called. However they are VERY expensive - even with my trade discounts and links.

what i normaly do is look at how big of a battery i can fit in the battery holder then get the centery or exide book and look at sizes and cca (cold cranking amps) and get the bigest i can get. the biger the battery the less load it has on it so you dont work it as hard and get a longer life span of of the battery. The factory battery for the lancer is a 55D23L
the voices may not be real, but they have some pretty good ideas :D:D

I have a Deka Intimidator 9A34R in my car. 780CCA, 55AH (these will load test higher...)

Three negatives for you:
1. Price: They Retail above $330 (I got a discount)
2. Doesn't fit the factory battery holder.
3. Being an Absorbed Glass Mat design it needs a special charger.
- upside to this you can mount it anywhere at any angle

Thanks for the replies guys. I'd love to go an optima battery, but it would be way too much for my system.

What sort of price range would I be looking at for something with around 500 cold cranking amps? Does anyone have any recomendations on ones I can get from like autobarn or similar?

For your price range you'l be looking at a lead-acid battery, try Kmart or battery world as well as your auto shops. If you can afford a N70 it will give you high CCA and reserve current

+1

Battery world is a good choice. I got my Deka through my local Battery world and the guys there know their stuff. They should be able to recommend something in your price range that will do the job for you.

In my mind there's no such thing as 'too much' battery for your system. I know you like your doof doof and if you run it with the car off then it's your battery that has to be up to the task. :)

Also seems to me that an extra issue your having is the extra lighting - neon's etc - inside your car which is another thing you have to allow for.

Ive been looking around and a guy I follow on youtube, some of you may have heard of him, Steve Meade...he runs XS power batteries in all his cars, and looking at their batteries they are resonably priced for what im actually after...

Is there any XS power battery suppliers in melbourne that anyone is aware of?
