I've also been told the ES was going to be phased out with the SX being the new baseline.

Isnt the SX just a seasonal model? Only comes out during certain times. Plus isnt it just an optioned up ES?

Phasing out the ES also would not make sense to Mitsubishi model designations as just about every model range has the ES-VR-LS-VRX tiers. SX and Activ tiers only come out in limited/seasonal runs to clear out existing stock or to attract the impulse buyers into the brand. Your halo models being RA/Evo. The ES-VRX designation has been with the brand for quite some time now, getting rid of it can pan out against the user base. These days car sales are also about user retention; getting rid of something they are use to and can easily identify will alienate the product. Prime example is Nissan's Tiida and Mitsubishi's own 380... Its all about user retention and brand awareness

With the ES, you have a clear distinction between each trim level. Having the SX as the entry point would take sales away from the VR mainly and cause a few problems for the VRX model. The SX has some features similar to both the VR and the VRX.

Eliminating the ES may bring back the problem Mitsubishi had with the last generation Lancer; they couldnt move the higher trim levels. With the CJ Lancer there has been equal movement of all trim levels.

From what I saw in the yard, the MY11 SX is not the same as the seasonal Lancer spec. Further, the VR has had substantial upgrades, so the movement between trim levels has bumped up. So, it's may be the jump from VR to VRX which will be been affected most.

You may find things like the front map lights are missing on the SX. possibly a few other things too i havent checked. Oh it still has the RED LCD Display. Friend of mine bought a 2011 VRX and it had colour lcd display.

I bought my SX in December 2010, how do i find out if its MY10 or MY11? it seems to have all the options mentioned above, and the guy told me it was a permanent model not just a seasonal one...

MY stands for Manufacture Year.

Look on the driver's side door seal of your car. There should be a metal plate to the left side bottom as you view it.

You'll see some numbers like mine: 03/08

Means mine was built in March of 2008 thus being MY08.

sorry ofey, but that's not exactly right. for example, my car was built in 08/09 but is a MY10 model. further, which model your car is, isn't listed on the car on the driver's side plate, or under the hood plate.

you'll need to check with your dealer to find out if you're unsure.

wouldn't be written in the manual or service book?

it says 08/10 on the drivers side door.

I had a feeling that a model year started about the the final quarter of the previous year. So about October 2010 onwards would be MY11 or so.

For MY10, this article is sort of representative of that:
