Mitsubishi SST (RA) compaison with Ford Powershift (Mondeo)

Postby BeHaV3 » Wed Oct 06, 2010 8:58 pm

Have an overnight test of a Ford turbo diesel Mondeo with the powershift tonight.

In auto mode it smooth through the gears, using the diesel torque to advantage. Not as noticable "clutch in/clutch out" on take off compared with the Ralliart. Very useful in 3rd gear in city driving.

In sport/manual mode it has the "toyota style" granny mode, cross checking you have made a selection and changing on what seems like 1/4 to 1/2 second on upshifts and up to 1 full second after selection on a downshift. No noticable blipping on downshifts (well I fell asleep waiting for the shift, so it might be me planting my foot on the accelerator rather then a blip!). General gearing much taller than the ralliart (making use of the relatively narrow rev range and diesel torque characteristics)

Will have another drive in the moring in stop/start traffic.
A worthy Camry challenger, and offering this engine/transmission will eat into Mazda 6 manual only diesel sales.

PS THe turbo diesel is a big step forward since the last time I had a mondeo diesel in the UK...about 15 years ago!

a bit more of a spirited drive this morning.
Perhaps the powershift transmission learns like the SSt, but definitely improved over yesterday.

Manual shfts seemed quicker.
In Auto there is a noticable cut of engine/throttle on up shift. Longer shift times than the ralliart. The sports auto mode holds the gears higher up the rev range, like the raliart (easier to select as you shift the selector to what woudl be manual mode in the ralliart is actually auto&sports in Mondeo)

Like the ralliart, will downshift on a downhill run while braking. More slipping of the clutches to match engine speed rather than blipping the throttle on downshift (suits the diesel, as the heavier engine does not spin up/change engine speed as fast as the ralliart).

All I can say...the Falcon wagon is dead for good reasons. Long live the Mondeo!!

I love my Falcon wagon, so practical and fits sooo much in the back, way more space then the new commadore.

Does the Mondeo wagon have heaps of space in the back like the Falcon did ?
