Painting Body Kits

Postby Envoke » Wed Jun 23, 2010 5:26 pm

What would be a reasonable price to paint something the size of the VRX front airdams and a rear bumper lip.

So they're not really big pieces at all, ive called a few places that roughly said 200-250 a piece which seems... steep.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

I think that's silly. The front air dams about A$150 together. The rear bumper lip if the same color is about A$100?

That seems to make much more sense... Sad when the paint costs more than the part :( was looking into the ARS front and rear lip kits, they dont look big at all, and are fairly cheap

its cheaper to paint more then it is small parts.

best way to paint small things is self painted, or a friend that is a painter.

the paint for Lancers is pretty dear around 150 for 1/2 a liter. maybe more.

Remember that the painter has to eat too.

They have to mix the paint, prep the parts, paint the item, clear coat etc etc.

$200 a piece is still a little steep though.

Why not get the X-Factor airdams, they come painted :)

Honestly do it yourself. The parts are small and the paint not that expensive. Get your paint matched and get the hardener for it. Wouldnt even bother paying somebody else to spray parts as small as those. If you do it yourself, get some good primer. Spend most of your time in the priming stages and you wont have any issues. Plus left over paint you can use when you scrape the shit out of the front pods.

If you have an air compressor and a spray gun you can do it all for under 100. Dont have a compressor some places can pressure pack it for you so you can spray it on. Plus some Autobarn stores sell special touch up spray bottle things. They about 30 or 40 and you put your paint into the bottle and its good if you dont have an air compressor.

I've got a compressor but no where to paint safely (everything in the garage will get wrecked)

Though i really dont wanna pay $500 on paint when the kit will cost me 300 haha, shall see how it goes

And what are most air dams/front lips like in terms of clearance... How much would i lose from stock? on the front bumper. Right now i can clear all kerbs etc but it still scrapes underneath (i know if i get a lip, kerbs will kill me) but was just wondering if my driveway will be a problem too

Continuing on from this thread, I am wanting to get the pods for the front bar but a bit dubious because i have already lowered my Lancer. How much lower than the front bumper are they?

One of the reasons why I switched to the RA bumper bar was this scraping problem. Those front pods are just there to scrape. When you have a front lip that extends as far out as you see on our cars, it will scrape coming down on inclines.

No way of preventing it. Even without lowering your car, it happens.

Physically go to the painter with the pieces or a picture and get an accurate quote. The painter is probably envisioning something bigger and hence charging so high for it...

It also depends on what the part is made out of.
Fibreglass takes alot of prep time to get it right and customer satisfied.
After market plastic parts still need a fair bit of prep work.
OEM original parts are not so bad and can be pretty much painted straight up.

Autobarn said they'd mix my paint type - 1 litre for $120 or so. Hmm.
