Power to OBDII port.
Quick question ... how long is power provided to the OBDII port after the car is switched off. Is it constantly powered, or does it switch off after 30 minutes like accessory power? I have a KIWI Wifi OBDII module to run tracking to my iphone. It has a power switch on it, but I'd like to mount it up under the dash. Jst wondering if it'll turn off eventually, or whether it will have constant power to it. I don't really want to leave it on overnight to test if it's not going to turn itself off.

Depends which pins your Kiwi thing draws the power from...
There is always 12v at pin 16 but on some cars there is also power on another pin when ignition is on. Pin 5 is ground.
I think the Lancer only has the constant power as it has CAN so the interface sees the CAN signal and knows the ignition is on that way.

I know it stays on with the car switched off and locked ... so I would guess then that means it'll probably stay powered 24/7.
Damn ... thanks for the info Adrian.

Pretty sure it'd draw a fair bit. It send over wifi and looks for the connection until it finds it. I'd say that'd use a fair bit of power. Most likely considerably reduce the life of the module too.

Like I said above, it's most likely device dependent. Your device will see there is no ECU activity so it will turn it'self off. The OBD port is powered 24/7

Interesting observation here with my GReddy Informeter Touch. When I first got it installed (no changes since then), when I turned the car to accessory, the screen would freeze and then say Canbus Connection Lost, and it would keep restarting doing it's little animation thing and then saying Canbus unable to connect, etc... but now, it's as if the thing figured it out and it turns itself off when the car is switched to accessory.

How would you know if it's actually feeding live data? Or if it's just frozen/etc... *shrugs* Without using the app itself and seeing how it responds, difficult to say.

This OBDII thing sounds interesting. Can you tell me what it is and or does?

OBDII port is the diagnostics port which also happens to output alot of live signals from the car's computer e.g. speed, rpm, boost, water temp, intake temp, etc..
There are numerous devices which basically plug into the OBDII port (it's a standard shape/size plug) and can read this data and present it in a visually appealing format. There's the aforementioned iPod Touch/iPhone solution which relies on a OBDII to WIFI plug (approx $150usd) in addition to the free software; but there's also a few different GPS manufacturers which can read the data from OBDII. I personally use the GReddy Informeter Touch on mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wumRBaelKQk

Ben - Tested connecting to it after leaving it on with the car off and locked. The iPhone connects, but doesn't display VIN data, and displays as 0.0V in the top corner voltage display. So it's clearly not getting any data, however the module is constantly trying to find a connection. It was warm after a few hours too, so I'd say definitely worth putting it in a place where you can reach easily to switch on and off.
