if you read everything properly, you can make CF bonnets legal. by the use of a aluminum core or a plastic one. as both of them are flexible Carbonfiber and fiberglass shatter, if they have nothing to flex with IE like plastic or metal. that's why there are CFRP carbon fiber reinforced plastic. if they can be proven to be strong enough to not snap off at the hinges they would be legal, as they do not shatter. its the same a concrete. by its self it shatters easily. with a flexible steel inside it, it doesn't shatter its stronger and it flexes.

I would like to facepalm, but wont get animated anymore over this... CF can be homologated on any vehicle, but must be crash tested on the vehicle to be passed under ADR.. we have had this conversation before...

Irrespective of what they composite; mixed kevlar/carbon, carbon with alloys etc.. the fact remains, it will be illegal unless you get it engineered or it is crash tested by the manufacturer on the vehicle (this means OEM).

So, you buy your CF, if it cannot be plated by an engineer, then your insurer will love it when you crash your car... = no refund for you!

If, on the other hand you can find someone to engineer plate your mod, top work!

I still don't get how so many people can put CF hoods on their car in the first place knowing allt he above.

... maybe it's best to just use CF wrap :)

i guess most people who put CF hood will think that they are confident enough that they'll never crash into someone/something head on

if i had a daily/track car , i'll have both OEM and a CF hood :)

I pretty sure around 90% of people that put carbon fiber anything (hoods, wheels, mirror covers, flappy bits whatever) that dont come from the manufacturer are illegal. The time they find out its illegal is when damage has been done.

You can be the safest driver in the world that still wont stop some brilliant bastard for slamming into your car. Your accountable for your own actions, not everyone elses.

Regardless of what anyone says...Carbon fibre/Fibreglass hoods are illegal...

Topic has gone a bit a stray from what the original question was...I wanted to know at what point vicroads would step in to inspect the vechile in the event of an accident...

Vic Roads won't, but your insurance company will stick to the same rules.

So, the insurance company will inspect the damage (usually by digital images) and will notice the bonnet.

What if the accident wasnt my fault?

I know im probley being a bit picky here but..

What if i was going through a intersection at a green light 100% obeying the rules and some idiot comes through the intersection and T-bones me. Car is written off but they find that the hood was a CF one and therefore not legal...

Since i was not at fault and the hood did not cause any sort of injury, they would still cover me correct?

its wrong i know, but it will probably depend on hopw picky they are.

thay may void your insurance all together, they may do the repairs but not to the bonnet, therefore you will have to buy a new bonnet yourself.

but because being on your P's they would more than likely void your insurance

Vic Roads are only involved if the car is a write off/stolen. Chassis number gets recorded and put on a register. If that car comes up on Vic Roads registries again then the owner is in for a nice time :D

Your insurance assessor will go over the car in person and not just in pictures.

---

Right car written off and not your fault, will depend on insurer. From experience Ive had with this, your insurer will still cover you as they can get their money out of the other persons insurance company.

That being said, it all depends on the assessor and insurance company.

Tadz if your are driving a illegal car on the road and some one hits you they could find you at fault because your car should not have been on the road.

It is the same as not having a license or unregistered vehicle.

Their argument is you should not have been there. If you were not there you would not have been in an accident. As stupid as it is.

Even if it isn't your fault, illegal mod spells trouble for you.

As above, best case they won't cover the bonnet but will cover the rest.

Worst case they won't pay. Remember in your example, it would be the other persons insurance company who is paying for your car since they are at fault. If they can get out of paying it they will.
Love that car!
