When replacing the ABS module/pump will bleeding the brakes normally be enough to get any trapped air out of the abs pump? Is there anything else i should look out for when replacing the unit?

Cheers.

The ABS unit has its own mechanisms to vent air out of the system.
bleed your brakes properly and engage the ABS unit.
You also don't want to run ABS pump completely dry, run some fluid through it prior to installing
you can either send the command to it or take it on the road.

There are some useful videos on YouTube on replacing ABS pumps in new vehicles.
Whilst i haven't found a CJ specific video. the principals are basically the same.

Cheers. My OBD cable can only read generic commands (no ABS related data ). I will take it out to a dirt track near my place and give traction control and ABS a work out. I take it traction control uses the ABS pump as i lost it with ABS when the pump died.

The abs pumps in these cars seem to be having a lot of issues.

If your going to replace the hydraulic unit then you will need to stop the brake fluid from emptying the master cylinder when you remove the ABS unit.

otherwise you will need to bench bleed the master cylinder
Regardless of how well you do this you will need to bleed all 4 calipers anyway. as a pocket of air can result in
1.) failure of the ABS system again.
2.) rupture of the pistons in your brakes (requiring a caliper rebuild)
3.) complete failure of your braking system with pedal straight to the floor.

I would want a power bleeder for this.

Strongly advise to check out the workshop manual for removal instructions.
It has a detailed view and also labels as to which pipes that go into the unit are which brake hose.

I replaced the pump with an Evo one from a salvage yard. I need to reprogram the unit because the vin doesn't read the part number. The dealership that I took it took couldn't do it. But the owner said I needed to find a better advisor. So??

Hey Dennis,
Where abouts are you from? and what trim level is your lancer? The evolution has enormous brakes so the pump will be delivering much more pressure than your brakes require, and is possibly outside the parameters of the ecu to control. lancerdarryl will be more knowledgeable on this subject. the abs pump/modulator part number for my 08 VR-X is 4670A335 there are some available on ebay if you search that number, but having already forked out for an evo one you may want to consider on selling that to someone (new AU$1200)

Hope this has helped in some small way.

Pretty sure an Evo unit won’t work Pressure settings would be different to start with. Best off to find the correct unit.
