Hey all

Another one of those silly questions from a newbie.

The car I only just got a few days ago seems to have this strange idle knock sound coming from the depths of the engine or maybe clutch?

It,seems most pronounced at idle just sitting there clunkin away...

I guess this knock is really bad?

I went to a mechanic and he put new oil in it in a hope that may fix or quietin it down but to no avail.

I did a look on youtube and found an evo thst sounds exactly the same...

http://youtu.be/Q4eIvJTlD6M

Does anyone have an ideas on the problem or a solution to help me out.

Thanks

The rattle will be the spline on the end of the crankshaft that the spigot for the clutch sits in.It's a transmission out job to repair.Mitsubishi have manufactured an "improved" part ot fix the problem.

I read it on the US forums that many SST trannys made the same noise.
And that apparently it wasnt anything to worry about?

It does gets annoying when you have it on idle and windows down.

Does changing the SST fluids help at all?

Has anyone actually gotten this procedure done and fixed the noise?

Is there a proper procedure or fix or upgrade that can be done to it?

Does it have to go to Mitsubishi or should it be done by a trans / clutch specialist?

What do you think it would cost to get done?

i do hear the rattle noise until i put my foot on the accelerator

i got my flywheel hub replaced at the start of the year around jan or feb the noise went away for like a week tops then it came back. cost me 2k to get it done

i recently went back to Mitsubishi to ask them what the rattle was and they told me my clucth is on its way out and it will cost 5k to replace that includes oils, filter, clutch and labor

BUT when i drive i dont see/feel the clutch slipping, miss shifting or any of that hill climb shuttering TOUCH WOOD!!! so ill wait out til i need to swap oil out and ill replace it then (two birds with one stone)

From what ive read on the US forum, a lot of SST owners seems to have this noise, and it didnt seem to have bothered them in any way.

So for $5k to replace the clutch, Id think twice. Especially when Mitsu advised you to replace the flywheel hub and it did nothing.
This 5k you are going to spend might be part of their diagnosis as well, best consulting with some evo/ralliart specialist.

The fly Wheel hub makes that rattle noise like the video (mine wasn't that bad) however when u accelerate its more a clunk (foot completely off accelerator then back on or when taking off from lights or even in auto mode changing down gears eg at traffic lights) very similar to the clunk the air con makes when it engages is the only way I know how to explain. The rattle is there and slightly noticeable however most noticable when the engine turns off everything's stops and it rattles for 5 sec. I would of loved to hear the Evo during turning off of ignition!

I've had fly wheel hub replaced in September, everything went away however the clunk is back. Back to Mitsubishi I go for 60k service and check next Thursday. Fyi for the newbies I had new SST and pretty much whole driveline replaced at 25-30k, 3 transfer cases, friction plates etc etc etc

I've had a bad batch of fuel before which was the closest I've had to noise in video. Poor girl sounded like a diesel! I had Mitsubishi check it out and I've ruled out the service station/s responsible now and only fill up at one particular station. Worth trying changing your brand of fuel and or location you fill up as a cheap option?!

Well I have some good and kinda bad news.

The car was sent from where I bought it to a northside mitsubishi dealership to have the fault checked out.

Ive just been informed that the clutches are reported to be faulty and need replacing at a very high price.

The yard was told that it was actually a recall fault that was never done on my car, and now that its out of warranty they wont cover it.

Hopefull the yard will cough up the funds to get it fixed up. Lets see how good the dealers stat warranty will go.

I have an eve x sst, it does have that rattling/chattering noise during idle, i do have the clunks occasionally as well but it just seems to be quite common with the SST.

From my memory, the chattering noise stops as soon as ignition is off (i.e. the car has been turned off). But id pay more attention this arvo when I get home.

# new update, the car yard were just informed that mits wont do the work under warranty but the yard has deicded to pay for the costs.

It apparently is going to take a week to complete.

Bonus I guess.
