SST Questions

Postby RacerX » Fri Jun 19, 2015 11:38 am

Hey guys,
So im test driving a preowned MY11 Ralliart with 29000km on it tommroow. The car looks ot be quite clean, and service are all completed and well taken care of.
What should i be looking for in the test drive, any particular things that could lead to further problems later on.
Particularly in relation to the SST, how do i check the clutches are good, fludis good so on...

Help is apprectaited thanks guys.

Best advice it to take a friend, preferably someone with some mechanical knowledge. If the car is private then do all the usual tests and ask if you can get it checked by a mechanic, if they don't agree walk away.

Re the SST - Smooth changes up through the gears in normal and sport modes (going into a freeway or 100kph rds should give you enough room to check). Switch to manual if you are comfortable and do the same using paddles and the gearstick, again looking for smooth quick changes with no surge in rpm as the gear engages. Check behavior at low speeds in normal auto mode.

At 29k the SST would not have been serviced (45k on later models). Worth getting a mech to check underneath for leaks (trans oil will be present on the tray underneath if there is one) but pretty unlikely

and check for a rattling sound from the clutches and shudders on hill starts, but that model should be fine for that :)

should you decide to purchase this vehicle.
would be wise to also factor in the cost of replacing the fluid and filters after taking ownership.

that would be your next biggest item as the remainder of the service is pretty cheap.

there are threads on here that give rough costs and also alternatives to using mitsubishi DiaQueen SST fluid.

Costs of the SST change are ok it you do it yourself (not much more complicated than a standard oil change). Filter for $45 and Ford branded Diaqueen (same as Mits use) is only $38/ltr (need 6.75 ltrs roughly)
