Power steering flushed on 2year service?

Postby still_learning » Fri Jul 06, 2012 2:17 pm

Hi all,
New to forums

Booked my 2010 lancer activ in for its 2 year service. Have done only 22 thousand kilometers.

Was told by the rep at Heidelberg Mitsubishi that the power steering was due to be flushed and he quoted me $135 plus the $195 for capped price service. Thought I'd check with the brains trust on this one.
Didn't find any mention of this on the service sticky.
Thanks heaps guys!

2 yrs or 60,000kms whichever comes first from memory...

It would outline it in the service booklet...

I changed mine myself after about a year and a half.

It was a huge pain in the ass to do (I probably did it wrong and bled the old fluid from the wrong hose) and would recommend getting it done professionally.

$135 does seem a little steep though. Is that their standard price or is that calculated from amount of time it takes?

Don`t bother about the power, you will have sold the car before it gives trouble, if it ever gives trouble, save your money,

iTS EASY TO DO IT YOURSELF

1)Find the high pressure side pull the hose off the resavor

2)block the resavor side off and run the hose that you took of the resavor and run it into a bucket.

3)start the engine till there is no fluid left. Fit hose to resavor

4)refill with oil and start engine and keep turning steering wheel left to right lock to lock. Till wineing noise stops. and top up resavor. Done

This works with ever vehicle.

I've heard you'll break the pump if you try run it without fluid.

Can anyone mechanically minded confirm?

I had my 2 year service two weeks ago. They only replaced the oil, oil filter and brake fluid. No mention of the power steering fluid requiring a flush at all.

They upsold me on a capped price service? I'm pretty sure the brake fluid was mentioned in the service manual....

This is why I check with the brains trust. Just put my car in, guy at the service desk didn't mention it and it wasn't down on the sheet.

I did have alook in the service book regarding 2 year service and there was no mention of flushing. Thats the thing about these capped service deals, upselling everything extra.
