iam selling my supra and a guy offerd me a cheque. how can i trust that he has money in it and also the banks are closed tmrw and he is picking it up on sunday and i cant withdraw the money on that day. what advices can you guys give me as i no nothing about cheques and hot they work! and if i should trust the person or not thanks

I would not hand the car over until the cheque clears.

Bank cheque should be ok, unless im mistaken,you can cash that straight away. Personal cheque - no way i would accept that.

bank cheque usually debits the money out of the person's bank account , so to be able to print it out in the bank , the guy must have the money in his bank.

You're pretty safe, cos it won't be their car until you fill out the Change In Ownership Form, and you aren't obligated to fill out the form until you've been paid the agreed amount.

If the cheque doesn't clear, then they have to give the car back or pay another way.
If they don't give the car back, call the cops or sue them or something.

Just make sure you know who they are (their name & suburb at least!) so they don't drop off the map the second they get the car.

iam a bit worried because he is coming from the mainland and iam from tassie and i think it is a bank cheque not a personal cheque but i have to wait two days until the banks open because on sunday its closed monday its public holiday and tuesday they will open everything so should i refuse the cheque offer or should i get his details, its a really hard choice ?

If it is a bank cheque then that is as good as cash. That is actually the banks money.

A personal cheque can be cancelled or bounced because of a lack of funds.

So if it is a bank cheque then accept it but do not accept a personnel cheque and hand over the keys and registration form.

i had the same problem as you as when i sold my ute the guy came from the act to buy it but i was lucky and he used a bank check so all was good but if he was gonna use a personal cheque i wasnt gonna accept it id make him go get a bank cheque or cash instead.

Obviously it's also worth making sure you know what a bank cheque looks like as opposed to a personal cheque. For what it's worth, a bank cheque should be professionally prepared- that is, it should be from the bank itself, numbers/words should be typed, etc...

As PYLee mentioned above, they are safe in the sense the bank will only write the cheque once the funds are definitely available to them and have been debited from their account.

ok sure ill he messaged me right now saying it is a bank cheque so there isnt anything dodgy about the bank cheque?

thanks guys for your help i really appreciate it it made me less nervous so i would rely on bank cheque and go to the bank the he is with and get the money yea?

Deposit it at any bank, it doesn't have to be their's.

ok but ive never seen a bank cheque before because i never delt with it before but ill look on google but i should realize how it looks and it should look real to. so hopefully everything will be good on sunday guys you really helped me to get the stress away but how can i know if the cheque is true or false and the banks are closed for 2 days sunday and monday is a public holiday here!
