Car for the Mrs

OK, so I borrowed my wifes 1996 Jeep Cherokee in the pissing rain and while I loved having it in rear wheel drive and snaking it up the road it did worry me about how unsafe it is. So, now I have the idea in my head she needs a new car, especially as she is driving herself (obviously), Dion and soon a new born around. What should I get???

Am thinking spending up to $20k and don't want another mid size family car. Am thinking getting a 5 door small hatch OR a SUV/4x4. 90% of the time it will only be used for pottering around town, to the shops etc, if we go for an SUV or 4x4 we may take it for holidays. Initial thoughts are small car, and hire a big SUV for trips or squeeze in the Lancer.

Went to see the new Fiesta and I liked, in Zetec guise it has all we need and more and the boot is probably large enough for a buggy and all the crap that comes with a new born. The other car I want to look at it Suzuki's SX4 - small SUV style hatch, with a nice high ride height.

Think the Colt is too small, as is the swift. The Mazda 3, Lancer, Focus etc is TOO similar to mine. Thoughts and sugestions?

I agree with you about the new Ford Fiesta. I'd suggest that. Also the Suzuki SX4 or their Swift Sport could be a good buy too.

I like the Swift Sport but apparently it has an even smaller boot than the Colt.

Mazda 2 shares 75% of its part with the Fiesta so will be worth a look - it just looks much smaller than the Fiesta

But isn't the i30 just another mid size hatch?

Other option is a 3 year old Territory, and use it for family holidays. Can get a Ghia for $20k

i30 is not mid-sized, but it's not small either.

I'd get i30 diesel.

I can't stop thinking about the Fiesta, it gets awesome reviews, is different enough to the Lancer for me to enjoy and looks superb. Will be sensible and have a good look at the others on offer but it will take some beating

Yeah the i30 is a good choice too! I forgot about that and it does come very well reviewed.

As much as I like Mitsu, I don't think the sportsback will be a good idea. No point getting 2 of the same cars IMHO.

We looked at the i30 before we bought the Lancer. The price and warranty were great unfortunately the finish of the car is not quite up to the standard that I would of expected. They do look nice on the road though. Imo I think silver or gunmetal is the pick of the colours.

Found a car for the Mrs. Last hurdle, convince her it is the ideal family car for her daily drive (could be tricky)

Nice example of a GT-A Evo. Rare as hens teeth in Oz.

But Automatic. Therefore shit. IMO. Good for the missus I guess haha

I recently drove a i30 and I seem to recall posting my thoughts in another thread. I think the "CJ Competition" thread actually.

Looked at the VW Golf? Would be some nice bargains soon as the Mk6 is about to be released...
