I have a 1st generation iTouch, but I want the 3rd generation apps. So would it be possible to buy the 3rd generation software to put on my 1st generation iTouch and still have the 3rd generation applications work on it?
I hope that makes sense...
The reason why is because there are no 1st generation application in the iTunes store; and no, I'm not going to jailbreak my iTouch

If you can see them in the App Store, they'll be compatible.
AFAIK the only thing you miss out on are where apps are specifically designed to take advantage of features which aren't in your 1st gen iTouch such as bluetooth (e.g. multiplayer games) or the microphone (e.g. song recognition software or voice recorders) or the inbuilt speaker (e.g. GPS navigation software; which also fails because there's no GPS).
ps. I also have a 1st gen iTouch. I've found most of the freeware games to be fine.

Do you have 3rd generation software? Or do you still have the original 1st generation software? I don't want to purchase applications just to find out that they don't work and when I say I saw them in the app store, I meant I went to the store on my computer, not my iTouch
Sorry I forgot to mention that I've updated my iTouch to the latest software... I think you need to do that as a minimum in order to always have access to the latest applications. It's worth it not for the new features (which IMO are quite pointless for 1st gen iTouch users) but for the improved stability/speeds in wifi browsing in Safari.
If in doubt, why not just download the freeware/trial/"Light" versions first to find out?
